I personally think transparency shoud start before a horse is even purchased, why? Most first time buyers rock up at the sales accompanied by the trainer(advisor)the echo trip start and adrenalien flows your bid is accepted when it is at the Cape yearling sale the hidden cost for that buyer is the training fees that should be added onto the actual purchase price we all know a lot of horses only start racing at 3 by ths time the new owner have lost all interest and that is why so many people come and go .I owned a lot of horses and even after being in the game a long time I have had my colours for over 8 years now I was taken for a ride by a prominent trainer in Gauteng he sold me a filly in training and after I paid him he told me the horse is struggling to get a starting stall certificate but he will get here passing the gates he had the audacity to charge me for keep for the next 6 months at 4500 per month(in advance) without her ever getting to race -I am not sour because of this I learned my lesson I had other horses with the same trainer that at the time were very competitive and therefore stayed with him at the time.In my experience honesty for the good and the bad and here I will mention a trainer that always treated me with total honesty Dawid Nieuwenhuizen a small trainer but he calls a spade a spade -In conclusion Mr Irwin with all respect for your perfect english Umlilo contribute his views on this link and wasnt contesting in a journalistic competition of accuracy in terms of structuring-and for me I am a dutchmen that grew up on a farm and cant really speak english and as long as people follow the basic line of conversation on this forum it is cool -Good luck Bart you are working in the right direction and to make your stable work be carefull of "big"owners they tend to think they own the stables spread your ownership and you will have a happy stable have 1 owner that owns more than 25% of your horses and you will end up in a predicament

@barry irwin:

Your personal comments do not deserve elevation or response suffice that (as Bicnic observes). Also, we are her to comment / observe / regurgitate... whatever on issues that are close/important to us.

(I have made numerous allusions to my bifocals and the diffuclty I have with typing... I suppose you will hit out at every disabled/ senior person you come across because they do not fit into your stinking shoes? Sick you are!)

You also seem to have a penchant for attacking my points of view rather harshly! Why? You a racist / supremacist under sheep's skin?

You judge people in terms of your (presumed) intelligence and hurl insults left and right.... you God?

How we say it (if not the King's English or the American bastardised version) is not what matters.... it's what we talk about that matters.

For a person of your standing..... reallly disgusting! I will tell it to your face one day when I see you on the tracks

Your country bombs others... you throw insults!

Why don't you just f... off?

Some horses can run three times in a week, others need at least a month between races. Any half decent trainer can work out which is which, but you can't expect every horse to be up to it. Using Clinton Binda as an example, if he'd tried to do with Opening Night what he did with Saint Stephen, Opening Night (or what was left of him) would probably be pushing up daisies by now. But of course it's nice to see them run often, and it was a real kick for me when "my" horse Shalako won twice in three days earlier this year. He would have tried for the hat-trick another three days later, but his MR got too high for the race he was entered for and he was scratched as being ineligible. Three wins in less than a week would have had even the late Buddy Maroun saluting!

On the subject of sanity well aware we have different types of horses however my point was that the norm 90% run horses 4/6 week break and maybe we have more horses that could run more often?
The frustration here is after the 4/6 weeks you get bad draw, or meeting off? and start again with nomination process and by the time you get a run the horse needs the run.

just my inputs >:D<

Umlilo, I don't know what bifocals or one's age has to do with typing, but if you are challenged in these regards, please accept my apology.

And thanks for calling me a racist!

That's a first for me and I always wondered what it would be like to be called one.

Laughable!

How about hosting?
How many trainers take the time to watch the race with the owner or even have a drink after the race and discuss what went wrong and future plans, on that subject of hosting, I have a mate who races horses in australia and he tells me if you have a winner you are invited to a special box after the race to watch the replay with your buddies and food and drinks are served for all from your party till the winner of the next race comes through.
It would be nice if owners were given more respect and special treatment

Bad Company: unfortunately, in most racing venues, owners have to make their own fun.

As I tell our racing partners, you better take your own satisfaction in your efforts, because nobody is going to pat you on the back. It is more likely that your peers will be jealous than congratulatory.

I like how they do in Europe and the British Isles, where the first four horses are brought back and their connections meet to discuss the race. More often than not the trainer will then chat with the owners and many times a drink will follow.

what if we were to reverse the question and ask what would trainers like to see in owners?loyalty maybe but this is certainly scarce in this country

Well we had carl burger, bart rice and brian wiid post on this thread, so the floor is theirs
WHAT WOULD TRAINERS WANT IN OWNERS
I guess you right barry, but if racing is a social scene and not a buisness for the small owner surely the authorities should offer more perks to attract more clients like the casinos do
