Today, Saturday, petrol is at $1.38 per litre in Melbourne. I am not sure about worldwide but the petrol prices here in OZ change on a daily basis. Currently Saturdays are the cheapest days ( cheap days tend to change), expect a drop to $1.36 per litre and the cycle would change by tomorrow where petrol would be around $1.51 per litre. Smart move, if possible, fill up on a Saturday, around midday. A plus is that if you shop at one of the 3 bigger supermarket chains, you get 4 cents per litre discount if you fill your tank at one of the service stations co branded with the supermarket. Depending on which service station you fill up, make a purchase of $2.00 in shop at servo, you get an additional 2 cents per litre or smome other you need to spend $5.00 or more and get an addtional 4 cents per litre - so you shop smartly you could get 4 - 8 cents per litre of the base price. And the shops within service stations are not overpriced when compared to supermarket shelf prices unlike in South Africa. Another option is to buy discounted gift cards where you get 5% discount off the face value of a gift card and use this to pay for petrol.
Saying all that, petrol prices has increased over the past year, October 2010, i was paying $116.8 cents per litre for the base price of petrol.

ditch your car and catch the tram. Melbournes trams are great. I lived in St Kilda and thats the way I got around.
