Of course it is a sport!
Here is a story that, while anecdotal, is based on facts and numbers.
I joined Facebook earlier this year, or late last year, I cannot even remember.
But prior to the Kentucky Derby I had about 250 "friends."
Immediately after the Doiby, I picked up about 150 new "friends." Most of the new people were guys that played the horses. When they followed my Facebook page and learned precious little about which of my horses were worth betting, they disapppeared. Now I have more than 1,000 "friends," more than 600 of whom came after the Doiby that were NOT punters.
The vast majority were women and they don't gamble on horses. They love the sport of racing. They are my pals, because we share a love for the sport.
End of anecdote.

Definition
sport/spôrt/
Noun: An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others.
Betting or not this is a sport first. Mankind has competed and raced everything from sticks and paper boats in drains to F1 motor cars. Definitely no chicken and egg stuff here. Man raced and competed on horses before betting came along
Check with Anton and Anthony to see if they consider this sport.

The reason many other sports don't need betting for funds is because we support them with our taxes. Anyway, how much is racing supported by Tote takeout and how much by horse owners?
Why the SA sports channels and websites don't feature racing is an interesting topic of debate in itself. It must have been mooted in meetings to include it surely? If it was and was turned down, why? If it wasn't, why? I'd love to know the reasoning (if any). My own opinion is that we are still a stuffy Calvanistic country with a horror of gambling, but it's only an impression and I stand under correction.
Rob Faux ... I bet you'd love to set up a tournament! Naughty, naughty ... I can just imagine the voting at the end of the year ... Best Older Male, Best Older Female, Best Stayer, etc.
Maybe we can also make playing the stock market a sport (says Mav with a sour face). It certainly is a hell of a gamble.

Of course it's a sport.
Just because you play rugby or cricket or baseball professionally doesn't unsportify it in my opinion.
You can play poker for fun, for money or for a living, it remains poker...you just have to play it better.
And the sports are not funded by tax money, mostly they are funded by advertising spend via television, or mega TV deals for fifa or olympics. We the viewer pay ultimately for those.
