I do see the importance of having these days to give back to guys who are up early every day working our horses. However from an owning point of view it was very frustrating. Firstly the work rider we had couldn't speak or understand a word of English. He was told to keep Danger Point at the back end and start working on him at the top of the straight. The first 600 or so meters went well as he positioned the horse on the rail towards the back of the field with a decent pace being set. Then for whatever reason he decided to take a horse that comes from off the pace to the lead. No surprises the horse up the straight fades and finished midfield. I am not saying the horse would have won from the back but would have had a better chance picking the tiring horses off. Our trainer lodged a complaint with the stipes who informed him they had already received around a donee complaints for the day for riders riding poorly and not listening to instructions.
We waited about 2 months for this race as we never qualified for the race a few weeks before. Now we will have to battle to find another race for him. Our trainer also said he would never enter one of his horses in a work riders race again. I wonder home many other trainers feel the same. There are a few decent work riders but if you don't get one of them you chances of a good run are slim.
