Gosforth Park was also my fave, but my biggest win in the 80's was at Turfontein. I remember Lloyd winning the first leg on Devil's Tattoo for Ormond Ferraris. He then went on to run second in every other leg. Bennie de Wet won 2 legs that day. Jackpot paid R5000. Also the bipot at Cape Town was called the quinpot. I rmember winning one my dad played for me when I was 5 years old.

I'm looking at Gosforth Park's last race card - 2nd Feb 2002 - the Met was run the same day. I remember at the time I thought it was a poor race card but how wrong I was:
Race 1 - the unraced Aquila Rapax.
Race 4 - still a maiden and her 3rd run was Kournikova - she was subsequently only one of two horses to have ever beaten Ipi Tombi.
Race 7 - Al Nitak's 2nd start for Buddy Maroun and subsequently a multiple Grade 1 winner.
Race 6 had a bet called the Supa Tupa - whatever that is.
"Fundi" is the new name mystery bet.
Some carded trainers are Tanse Leisher, Mazaham and Tambourlas.
Some carded jockeys are Lisa Prestwood (subsequently 1st girl jock to win a Gr1 (Al Nitak)) and Kevin Derere (subsequently 1st black jock to win a Gr1).

@titch
ever wonder how much the 25 percent take out affects your winning chances? But never mind that cause any self respecting punter does not back on the tote.
I won't be backing ponies again cause I feel like a fool when the results simply don't tally. Yes there might be some successful punters but generally, when one looks around, you are surrounded by losers and hobbyists. If you get good info and bet intelligently you should show a decent profit.
I have followed tipsters based in PE and been just as dissapointed. They are snake oil salesman. Selling the idea of a magical profit to the usual customers.
On a more positive note, racing does leave some wonderful memories, those champion horses that really did perform consistently and reliably. The horse men should take a leaf out of those horses books... well some.

@ Fogwils
I think the horse you refer to that beat Rule by the Sword was Jungle Rock which was trained by Spike Lerena .He was a lovely grey.
On another occasion Rule by the Sword caused a huge blwout when he came from the clouds to beat the grey Bodrum[Jeff LLoyd] in another feature race.

At the risk of belaboring the point the 25% take out does not affect ones winning chances only your winning amount...much like taking 35/1 on roulette wheel but has to be better than black jack when the bank can often take your money without even having to draw a card??

The pools just keep growing and the sales rings remain full...so if the racing punters are moving away to other forms of gambling then there is either new players making racing their choice of gambling/entertainment or the played out story of a racing exodus is utter bullsh!t I tend to lean firmly to the latter.

Just to clarify my thinking in your opinion does riaan du plessis know what he is doing or not?? he seems to slide up and down your hit parade to suit your argument at any given time
