Let me just rephrase that.... if part of a big perm only the number of combinations affected will be refunded...four horses boxed you get back R18 for a trifecta.... 3 horses boxed it becomes an invalid bet and you get your stake back.

You would get a refund on you bet if you boxed 5 in a trifects for R60 it now becomes a 4 horse box for R24 so you would get back R36.
