I am a small owner and I have and will win big races. 3 grade ones and counting..... There is space for all under the sun bud and you can never hold a good horse down. I have never used one of the top 5 trainers. Good horseman/trainers are out there and I prefer to make use of their services for a number of reasons. Big trainers and big owners will gravitate towards each other, which leaves a huge piece of the pie for us small guys.

Fact remains, horse in his care was in sub standard condition...
Do we show sympathy towards the man, or the horse?
Its like saying trainer ABC has to feed trainer XYZ yet he has no obligation to do so...

BM cannot be held accountable in this as he was not taking the feed out the horses mouth...

I must agree - BM has nothing to do with MR Mac's poor record and training failure over the last few years and nobody wants to see anybody down but Mr Mac is the author of his own disaster in this case. If the horses were in a fit state then the NHRA and SPCA would not have responded at all -

Tax dodgers ???.......perhaps!!!?

What is the financial benefit derived by an owner paying money monthly for a horse/donkey that has no chance of winning a race....love of the game?

If it is love of the game, then the owners have the money to waste, unless of cause there is a benefit to owning a horse, and been patient to wait for a betting coup.

Racing is becoming like voting for Zuma/ANC, one can only assume, that with a choice of name like Phumelela, that this is another black enrichment scheme........thank god my culture is not reliant on material wealth, but rather on principles! And there are no excuses for lack of principles.

@savasp:

'Don't kick a man when his down and out, have pity'

There are two parallel situations here which warrant merit; flogging one because he's human does not seem fair!

Yes, you do have a point, and I see through and respect it!

Wait for the appeal and hear what's behind the problem / situation (as even Szu noted); ...... might shock us all!

This is a cut throat game,always has and always will be.There are more backstabbers in this so called business than in any other industry.I have personally witnest jockeys or wrkriders fall off horses at track while the trainer might be in durban for the season and has left the assintant in charge and another trainer obseving this make a phone gall to the owner and tell his expensive horse is running free all over randjiesfontein and the next thing you know the horse is moved to his stable.Ihave seen swerving trainers steal food and leaveings and bedding out of the top trainers barns because they dont have the money to feed them because of defaulting owners when times get tough the horse the so called hobby is the last to get fed.There are many so called owners that are racing under the lap,meaning they dont have colours and the horse is not registered to them so when they go down the tubes the horse is the last thing on there mind so they dont pay and then you find the swerving trainer is between a rock and a hard place he might now have say 10 horses out of apossible30 that he has to feed and if the situation continues and does not improve this is where we end up.This man John Mac has been in the game a long time,i know him as a animal lover,anice person who willingly would not have allowed his horses to get thin.Give the man a break.The true story about this whole sordit affair and blow up about taking his licence IS ALL ABOUT THOSE BOXES HE HAS HIS HORSES IN
