England romped into the final of the Champions Trophy when they dispatched South Africa by seven wickets, the visitors’ demise not so much a choke as a joke, following their lame batting display earlier in the day.
Set 176, after Stuart Broad and the two Jameses, Tredwell and Anderson, had dismissed South Africa with more than 11 overs of their innings remaining, Jonathan Trott and Joe Root steered them to their first global 50-overs final for nine years.
Trott, who made 82 not out in a situation tailored for his no-nonsense, risk-free style of one-day batting, also struck the winning runs, a cover-driven four off Robin Peterson.
Providing one’s ambition is not in the 300-plus realm, Trott is arguably the most dependable one-day batsman in world cricket. The only downside is the pressure his team-mates feel batting with him while he is warming to his role, something South Africa’s modest total yesterday never tested.
On a pitch that was just off flat, but against an opponent that decidedly was, Trott simply wrapped himself in his bubble and batted away until the job was done, which, after he and Root had added 105 for the third wicket, was in the 38th over.

Lets be honest, Trott has turned into a very good international cricketer and one of the most consistent around, wish he played for SA now...

i wonder how he would of got on playing against Welsh, Ambrose, McGrath, Pollock, Akram, Donald, Bond, Waquar etc. Not very well imo.

GB, wickets of today are mostly flat and suit the batsmen, that's why most of the top bowlers are taking lucrative IPL contracts to prolong their careers, and make more money of course.
Trott`s record in the Ashes is as good as any English batsman in the last 20 years and would think his win/loss record against the Aussies is just as impressive.

I have just realized that our team are actually champions
champion losers 8 times we have lost games in semi finals since re admission
not even Gary could get them right, and he made India WC champs so the problem can not be him
fact is we lost wickets like gr 5 schoolboys( actually I think some of them Grade 5 boys would have fared better )
e lost wickets through poor batting and not thinking what we are doing not because England was the better bowling team we lost the game by our own stupidity.
according to Wikipedia stupidity is :
Stupidity is a lack of intelligence, understanding, reason, wit, or sense.
I think that fit the proteas
furthermore:
Etymology of the word
Engraving after Pieter Breughel the Elder, 1556. caption: Al rijst den esele ter scholen om leeren, ist eenen esele hij en zal gheen peert weder keeren (Even if the Ass travels to school to learn, as a horse he will not return as a horse)
Stupidity is a quality or state of being stupid, or an act or idea that exhibits properties of being stupid.[3] The root word stupid,[4] which can serve as an adjective or noun, comes from the Latin verb stupere, for being numb or astonished, and is related to stupor.[5] In Roman culture, the stupidus was the professional fall-guy in the theatrical mimes.[6]
Definition of Stupidity
The modern English word "stupid" has a broad range of application, from being slow of mind (indicating a lack of intelligence, care or reason), dullness of feeling or sensation (torpidity, senseless, insensitivity), or lacking interest or point (vexing, exasperating). It can either imply a congenital lack of capacity for reasoning, or a temporary state of daze or slow-mindedness.

I believe some of the blame must be laid squarely at the selectors door !! I cannot understand the balance of the team. Also at present we do not have one decent all rounder to come in at 7.

20 needed off 15 balls with 6 wickets and 2 set batsmen in the bank. If SA did that we would never live that down.

on the very same ground some 14 years ago with the scores level in the semi final of the world cup, Alan Donald somehow managed to run himself out giving Australia victory. Still rankles to this day
