One of the horses in the fields named BATTLESHIP was a lead horse at Greyville many years ago. Anyone remember the era of lead- horses?

The last hurdle race in Joburg was on the day that Rootin' Tootin won The Oaks at Turffontein.....it was the last race of the day with 5 or 6 starters....
Race was won by Arrow Town 4/10 trained and ridden by Brett Warren.....won by half a race course....:S

Hi Bob, I remember the race well I rode Amlash 2nd place to Dermort Weld on Poplin. He took off like a bat out of hell down the back straight and gained 30 lengths. He faltered at the last hurdle and literally held Poplin off the deck. There was no ways anyone was going to catch him. We called him the "flying Irishman"

The Port Elizabeth National hurdle race was taken off the calendar in the mid 70ties. The chairman of the PE turf club withdrew its venue. Rumors of rigging the race were circulated.
