Very very interesting and entertaining to read even though i had not experienced any of those greats you guys mention . I can only vaguely recall the days of Model man , bush telegraph , mark anthony , aquanout and cincinati .

Bookmaking must have been a lot different back then . For a Adonis to have bets of R250k over four races is just unbelievable ! Today if by the odd chance you wanna take R50k of a 10/1 or a 12/1 the first thing the clerks say to you ,is, " let me check whats available".

Then they lay you 10k at the price then the rest at another price etc etc etc . Then you get sporingbet that restrict punters to ridiculous limits .

keep this thread going guys its makes for interesting reading .

Bob Stevenson, RL Stevenson Construction boss I think. Used to clean them up on course starting from one end of the ring to the other!!!

Also owned a few horses I think, used to be trained by Tony Furness.

FITZGERALD won the Gordons [ now Greyville 19OO] in his colors start to finish under " Big-race " Joe Byrnes.

He had a full sister MY SWALLOW, she belonged to a very good friend of my dad Dick Bosman, was racing in CT and he wanted to move the horse to JHB so my dad suggested Jean Barnard who then was in her early days of training, she was one of Jean's first multiple winners, if I am not mistaken talking '74/75,
I do not know if they bred with her, would be interesting to know if they did what happened with her offspring if they did, their might be a horse running around with In Full Flight blood in his veins :)

just for interest sake a horse called King of the Roses ( hope I got this right) by Flower Power held the record at Turffontein for a 1000m, I am not sure I think it also belonged to Dick Bosman, or if I am mistaken DR. P G Khoury who also was a good friend of my dad.trained by Hennie van Wyk. man did we make money on that horse!

As a matter of fact my dad knew quite a lot of people in racing and the stories he could tell.....

One day was at the course with him. 15 years old then, @ Germiston, as the horses come out of parade ring Jean Barnard walked over to my dad and said her horse a first timer will not lose it was 6/1 and we helped ourselves, the horse jumped as short price fav and won b a street, I think 8 lengths, the horse was STRAIGHT EIGHT, we ran around collecting from the bookmakers, collected around 100K, in those days you could buy a house for that price, which my dad did in Alberton Brackendowns, 4beds, large stand 2 x garages for R150 000. man those were the days

Not the biggest ,but the smartest and most successful punter I ever came across was Tony(Abie) Abrahams-gave up his job as an accountant and became a pro punter in his twenties((in the early 70's)
Last I heard he is still doing the same-would love to have a chat to him wherever he is now as I knew him when we were both trying to "perfect" a system!!

Etienne and Abie were also friends-we all played cards together in the "joints" when no racing...lol

Yes Pirates,I heard that, like for all of us ,the MR system made it much tougher................I think I heard he was a pro poker player now..............he is an incredibly smart and disciplined bloke...........I would be surprised if he wasn't pretty successful at that.

(BTW ,nice to have you back.)

Cape Guineas 1972 newspaper report (sorry it's not very clear I have it in 10 meg resolution, but had to downsize it to 450k due to ABC restriction).
