RIP Bertie, condolences to family. Polititian was my first July winner I ever backed, what a combination of horse and jockey

So sad to hear this. He was one of the best of his generation. May he rest in peace.

Sad, passing of an era. Great times, as a youngster sneeking in to the Kenilworth course to watch my old mans horse racing ,only to be beaten on the post by the great Politician. Many laughs and great times. RIP Bertie Heyden

It is with sadness that we bid farewell to jockey Bert Hayden, 68, who passed away yesterday. Bertie's name is equivalent in stature with legendary horses Mazarin, Politician and Yataghan, whom he rode to victory in the 70's. But there was also Anytime Baby, Archangel, Chichester, Fearless Streaker, and who can forget Furious, Gigantic, Mildenhall, Sentinel? The little boy who, at 4, fell off a horse but was put back on with a bloodied nose, went on to achieve wins in all the Grade 1 races South Africa had to offer. He started his apprenticeship under Robert Jackson in Durban, as a 14 year old. After 5 years he joined the training stables of Harold Wright in Cape Town, and then Syd Laird, which is where he achieved win after win in major races and for which history will remember him. The Thoroughpedia Team.
