'Mugabe geeft privé verlies toe'
JOHANNESBURG - De president van Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, heeft in privékringen toegegeven de verkiezingen van afgelopen zaterdag te hebben verloren. Dit berichtte donderdag het Zuid-Afrikaanse financiële dagblad Business Day. Dat baseert zich op een anonieme bron rondom Mugabe.

Mugabe zou hebben erkend dat het Zimbabwaanse parlement voor het eerst niet meer gedomineerd wordt door zijn partij, de Zimbabwe Afrikaanse Nationale Unie-Patriottisch Front (ZANU-PF) maar door de oppositie. Verscheidene familieleden en adviseurs zouden erop hebben aangedrongen dat Mugabe zijn verlies toegeeft en de politiek verlaat. Sommige ZANU-radicalen willen echter dat Mugabe volhoudt en probeert er nog een ambtstermijn uit te slepen uit een tweede ronde voor de presidentsverkiezingen.

De belangrijkste oppositiepartij, de Beweging voor Democratische Verandering (MDC), claimde woensdag dat MDC-lijsttrekker Morgan Tsvangirai in de eerste ronde al meer dan de helft van de stemmen heeft vergaard en dat daarmee een tweede ronde overbodig is.
