Foreign Agent won the famous guineas where Sledgehammer fell!!!
(Ironically raced in fairly similar colours to the Hurwitz colours of Sledgehammer.)
Sure there's been a Free Agent too ,though.

Im currently 35 be 36 in November. Born in 1978 when the mighty Politician completed the J&B Met and the July Double in the same year, the last horse to do the double in the same calender year. Unfortunately was not a gambler 6 or 7 years but my first recollection was Gondolier winning the July 1985 and my father told me pick a horse and somehow I chosed that horse. Interestingly, I think Uncle Percy ran 4th in the July in 1985 and I see it lined up in the Mainstay 1800 two years later as well with the same position (See Above Results). My first bet on my own was on the Mainstay 1800 day in 1991, walked to the tote myself and backed the winning horse, Olypmic Duel who beat Divine Master and Miss Averof (Grey in Colour). Also backed a winning horse that day called Angeline and Foxy Vixen in the races carded earlier.

On popular opinion that Mainstay 1800 became labelled as the race of the century...

Gr1 Mainstay 1800 Clairwood Winter Handicap
25 July 1987
Clairwood Park on Mainstay 1800 day was the ideal setting for the race of the year – the renewed clash between the country’s top racehorse Model Man and heir-apparent, Bush Telegraph. The stage was set for either the former to emerge as the nation’s first equine millionaire or for the latter to maintain his brilliant unblemished record. But then a bit player in the form of Main Man stepped from the wings to grab centre stage.
Star performers are an essential ingredient for any real entertainment, no matter what the eventual outcome, and perhaps it’s the unexpected that makes for racing being such an exciting spectacle. The Mainstay 1800 provided it all. Certainly the big names were there and in the end, it was an Oscar-winning performance by champion jockey Jeff Lloyd aboard Main Man that upstaged the powerful Garth Puller - Bush Telegraph, Basil Marcus - Model Man combinations.
The stage was set for a real humdinger when, within a week of the Rothmans July, the connections of both Bush Telegraph and Model Man elected to allow their charges to stand their ground at the final acceptance for the Gr1 Mainstay 1800. This alone assured a record crowd at the picturesque suburban track. That another nine runners - including the previous season's Horse of the Year - who collectively had won 69 races and more than R2,7 million in stakes made up the field to face starter Don Allanson, was an additional bonus.

A season before, when both Main Man and Bush Telegraph were babies, they clashed in that PMB cracking juvenile race I think called then the Smirnoff Sprint. They both came in undefeated. Main Man scorched to the front and just held on by a nose or so from the mighty finish of Bush Telegraph. Unfortunately, the stipes sustained an objection and gave the victory to Bush. Revenge for Main Man was best served cold in that Mainstay

Unfortunately for some reason it won't let me copy and paste the whole article for the Mainstay 1800 for the year 1987. Even the link don't want to work. To view the full article with pictures google racingmuseum.co.za 1987 Claiwood Winter Handicap. Its a fantastic read.

If memory serves me right, I think one can re-use a name after 20 years. I THINK this apllies to all names, but I could be mistaken.
