In London a guess would be over a 1000 shops Mr Hawaii. I would guess that Edinburgh has around 50 (maybe Bob could hazard a better guess) Yes far too many, mind you the high streets in the so called poorer areas of the UK have mostly Banks, bookies, pawn shops and loan shops. All the one off one owner shops are disappearing fast

I have one in Benoni(bookie) - and a tote - One in Boksburg and tote - In the PTA CBD I saw a big Betting World but not much else. I see more of these start-up bandit shops than totes(I don't know if they are legal but they have machines and the sign outside says INTERNET LOUNGE.) So the will to bet is there but the msg of controlled punting is not getting there - When my local pub host a Springbok game the place is full but from what I've seen the public are still unaware that they can have a punt on the game - That is one market that will grow and grow once people realize that they can couple a beer and a punt with a sporting event.

Maybe go the Aussie way with a pub on the one side and the tote on the other all under one roof. Now people will say no as punters will get pissed, but very seldom did I ever see a punter who was well intoxicated. That will attract plenty of extra people as the complaing wife/girlfriend/mistress or even hush hush boyfriend can have a bite and a drink while the punter has a flutter. Everybody's happy.

We are also missing the reason for this thread...
There are loads of people wanting to win money, the bookies are very busy, but the punters are not punting horses...
Put it this way i hear 60-70% of turnover is lucky number draws?

The Numbers racket made the Mob and still people would rather have a punt based on pure luck -I have no answer to that and suspect that the hope of a massive life-changing win will never be beat. I liken controlled punting to building a house brick by brick while dream punting is expecting to buy a village with one ticket. Reality obviously is a myth to the majority of people. Perhaps the economic climate lends it self to the"get-out of my life punt" while the promise of winning R1000 rand on a PA hardly excites.

Punters are increasingly bcomin frustrated wth the results & constant changing of bet types. Hense, why they are turning to numbers & sport bet.

Just changing the subject re numbers. Camelot, the people that run the UK lotto on behalf of some pension fund in Canada put up the price of a lotto ticket from £1 to £2 with the promise that more people would win. Obviously millions stopped playing thus the jackpot prize has deminshed. Now from next month in their wisdom they are adding 10 more numbers to the coupon, hoping that nobody wins it for a good few draws thus dragging in more players with the hope and dream of winning it big. They are destroying a good thing.

The balls come out of a machine, a machine that can be manipulated
FOMs are programmed to favour the operator and not the player
Horses are live and can wake up on the wrong side and not be in the mood
Jockeys who ride the horses can have off days and therefore not perform and by that I mean not bring out the best of the horse
Footballers have to perform as the money paid to them is huge. All of them are looking for that transfer to a big club where the big bucks are paid so they will give it there all. The players at the big clubs give it their all in order to get contract extensions. Yes football betting is the way to go.
