Should be competitive off that weight.

Pinatubo produced a Group 1 performance in the Vintage Stakes, laying down a serious marker for the rest of the year in the process.

Charlie Appleby's colt retained his unbeaten record in hugely impressive style at Goodwood, quickly putting a wide margin between himself and his toiling rivals to post a Racing Post Rating of 121 – the highest RPR ever awarded to a winner of the Group 2 prize.

Wins at Wolverhampton, Epsom, and of course Royal Ascot preceded this success, and each time the son of Shamardal has taken a marked jump forward in performance level. His new rating is roughly in line with what's needed to take his next reported target, the Group 1 National Stakes at the Curragh.

Pinatubo has Group 1 winner written all over him and joins a select club of two-year-olds to have broken through the 120 barrier when winning below Group 1 level as a juvenile.

Just four other horses have managed that feat in the last 20 years, and the list makes seriously impressive reading.

Frankel, Dubai Destination, Lady Aurelia and New Approach all went on to win at the highest level and it now just looks a question of when, rather than if, Pinatubo can do the same.

In behind the winner there was a fine effort from the runner-up Positive, the least experienced colt in the line-up.

Clive Cox's colt may have not been able to trouble the easy winner, but pulled a long way clear of some good horses and is surely destined to win some decent races himself.

Top ten two-year-old RPRs for 2019

Pinatubo 121
Siskin 115
A'Ali 112
Mystery Power 111
Raffle Prize 111
Arizona 110
Earthlight 110
Threat 109
Guildsman 108
Juan Elcano 108
