Diversity is good for the game. He is enthusiastic and adds some colour to calling. The old timers should forget about the past...it aint gonna be the same. Take up bowls or sit in a corner with mute. Nobody seems to ever be satisfied on this site. personnaly I would like to see Smiley and Dumpie calling. This is not the UK or France...we love characters in the game.

When you choose a career in the public domain, you should accept that there will be criticism.
IMO the commentator should be impartial and not commentate from his tickets or for his mates. You should call the race for all punters, trainers and owners, not just the connections of the favourite.
After every race there will always be more unhappy people than happy people. Singing a song about the winner feels like an in your face insult for the losers especially in a close finish.
Enthusiasm is good, but we don't hear the same enthusiasm when a long suffering trainer or owner win with a long shot.

Definition - A race caller is a public-address announcer or sportscaster who describes the progress of a race, either for on-track or radio and TV fans. .
Praise Singer - (South African English) (in traditional African society) a person who writes and performs music and poetry in order to praise a leader or other important person. Traditionally, a praise singer accompanies the chief on important occasions.
Surely there is a big difference - The very reason South African Racing is in a shambles is because we don't try to be professional like the UK or HK - The presenters spend more time extolling the brilliance of winners instead of concentrating on information for the public. Doing your job professionally has nothing to do with age - This guy clearly loves the game and instead of senior commentators who have retired mentoring him they are letting him develop bad habits which would preclude him of ever working Internationally .. He needs help in his delivery before and after a race as I think his race calls are fine - Ali Cohen is not much older than him and he is the current standard we should be looking for . We need young blood but we also need old heads to step in and help when the ship loses course .
We must also remember how every PAID voice shouted the name Jooste ,Van Vuuren and Mayfair whenever they could - Have we learnt nothing?

Sorry Dave but I had to rephrase your comments that " Ali is a hard act to follow at any level ".
I have read the great Ernie Duffield's book.....Through my Binoculars some time ago
His other book.....The History of the Rothmans July Handicap is also available on Amazon as is the first one
There is an Ernie Duffield Memorial Trophy Award every year by the KZN Annual Racing Awards.
Google his name and there's so much of information on this great racing man.
As I mentioned in a previous thread a few years ago, all the current lot put together cannot quite reach the heights of the late great Ernie Duffield.
From his time as a jockey to a commentator.....he was cut from a different cloth, a legendary old-timer.
Ernie Duffield is a hard act to follow at any level.

This is a moaning site...whats the problem. Do you think the powers that be will read ABC poll on Brandon and take action. This is a place where people shoot their mouth....maybe you should also get into the act. Have an opinion...everybody else has one😉

It just seems like excitement gets the better of him when he calls races prob bc he also has backed the horse that wins I think with time he will get better personally would love to see Revaun smit calls some races up in Gauteng as he has some excellent anecdotes while calling heads turn for home
From the tail over the top
I mean if he was invited to call a Race at Royal ascot or was it the Epsom Derby meeting not sure few years back he has to be pretty good
Watever happened to the presenter used to present at Kimberly couple years back think Bradley Was his first name timid quiet character

He's very good imo but it is annoying when your horse hits the front and his fancy is chasing you home, he's one of us though, the guy in the cape with the funny voice couldn't tie his shoes but he just calls the races as he sees it even though a length and a half isn't desperately close and doesn't talk up his trainer mates

His calling is fine, so is Sheldon's.....BUT....They have verbal diarrhea....the long winded "excitement" after the race gets a bit much....so i just mute. Rouvaun Smit always gets me in stitches with his "through the middle of the bend" :silly:
On another note, with respect, i simply can't listen to Cecil stumble over his words so many times during the day....so i mute!! Lyle is okay but when he starts rambling on about how we doesn't want to bore us any longer, it bores me hehehehe
And for the life of me i don't understand why they must break to a presenter to give us his selection for every race when we can be watching the horses in the parade ring or going down to the start.
I'm done moaning now
