Take three trainers out and you have a field of maybe 3 quality horsies.

Lions Blood Interesting nomination.

It is a handicap, so tread warily. At present Rudi Rocks, Eight Street and maybe Iron Wood catch the eye off their current marks, b ut De Kock does have some intriguing unknown quantities in there.

PHUMELELA MEDIA RELEASE

THREE more horses, Magical, Ultra Vires and What’s Going On, have been nominated at the second-entry stage for the R2-million Sansui Summer Cup (Grade 1) over 2000m at Turffontein on Saturday 28 November.
Magical, a smart Labeeb four-year-old, was unsighted in last Saturday’s Joburg Spring Challenge in his first outing as a four-year-old, but would have found the 1450m trip on the sharp side. So his Summer Cup credentials were not harmed one iota.
A victory in the Nijinsky Stakes, over the same course and distance as the Summer Cup, and a good second to Bouquet-Garni in the 2450m SA Derby should ensure him a place in the line-up, providing trainer Ormond Ferraris declares his charge to run at final-acceptance stage on Monday 16 November.
On current merit ratings neither Summerveld-based Ultra Vires (rated 90), although he is distance suited, nor What’s Going On (rated 84, runner-up in last Friday’s Michaelmas Handicap over 1900m) are likely to make the final cut in what is set to prove to be a high-class field.
Ruling champion trainer Charles Laird is making a huge push to win the Summer Cup for the first time. He has entered seven horses, six of which are rated among the top 18. So he could well saddle a third of the field. They include 2009 Champions Challenge winner Smart Banker and high-class four-year-olds Oracy (a highly regarded son of Zabeel, who won last season’s Gauteng Guineas) and Dan De Lago (won the KZN Derby and beaten just 0.50 lengths by champion Big City Life in the Daily News 2000).
However, Laird’s runners will face the might of Mike de Kock, who has won the Summer Cup five times in the last 10 years. De Kock also has a high-class entry that includes SA Classic winner Forest Path, Meet At Malamala (won three of five starts before going wrong last season) and Bouquet-Garni.
Joburg Spring Challenge winner Captain Scott is assured a place in the final field, though at his revised merit rating he will only get 3kg from Smart Banker and will meet Dan De Lago at level weights.

Entries with current merit ratings and trainers:
18 top-rated horses: BUY AND SELL (113) (S G Tarry); SMART BANKER (110) (C Laird); FOREST PATH (107) (M F De Kock); ORACY (106) (C Laird); LIKEITHOT (105) (C Laird); SENOR VERSACE (105) (C Laird); CAPTAIN SCOTT (104) (A G Laird); DAN DE LAGO (104) (C Laird); ALUMINIUM (103) (G V Woodruff); MEET AT MALAMALA (103) (M F De Kock); BOUQUET-GARNI (101) (M F De Kock); CATMANDU (101) (B D Botes); EIGHT STREET (101) (C Laird); SPORTING BOY (101) (A G Laird); HORATIO (100) (P F Matchett); LION'S BLOOD (100) (H J Brown); MAGICAL (100) (O A Ferraris); SENOR JET (100) (G M Alexander).
Others: AUTUMN FROST (99) (M F De Kock); LONG DOLLAR (99) (W H Marwing); ASLAN (98) (S G Tarry); FENERBAHCE (98) (G M Alexander); CAPE TOWN (97) (G H Van Zyl); CROWN OF POWER (97) (C Laird); IRON WOOD (97) (A G Laird); LONDON GUEST (97) (A J Rivalland); RUDI ROCKS (97) (C Laird); ROYAL REZ (96) (T Zackey); KILLARIDGE (95) (W H Marwing); E-FUEL (93) (D Rahilly); NIGHT RITUAL (91) (S G Tarry); AMBER FORT (90) (M F De Kock); ULTRA VIRES (90) (K Naidoo); BIEN (89) (G V Woodruff); RAY SAUCE (88) (S G Tarry); VERTICAL TAKEOFF (88) (S G Tarry); RICH STRIKE (87) (M F De Kock); DEALSDUNN (85) (G V Woodruff); WHAT'S GOING ON (84) (C Scott); REGAL RANSOM (82) (S G Tarry).
- Final entries close on Monday 2 November when the weights will also be announced.
- Final acceptances fall due on Monday 16 November.
- The final field will be announced on Wednesday 18 November.

PHUMELELA MEDIA RELEASE
SUBJECT: Sansui Summer Cup weights
DATE: Tuesday 3 November 2009
RELEASED BY: Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited

Current favourite Oracy has been allotted 57kg for the R2-million Sansui Summer Cup to be run over 2000m at Turffontein on Saturday, 28 November.

When the weights were published Sean Tarry’s Buy And Sell was given top weight of 60kg while Smart Banker, winner of the Champion’s Challenge over the course and distance earlier this year, will carry 58.5kg.

Weights may change up to the time of final declarations but there will be no change after declarations. Should the top weight be less than 60 kg at the time of declarations, it will be raised to that level and all other weights raised accordingly.

A field of 20 horses will be selected for this race of which two will be designated as reserve runners. The final declarations close at 11am on Monday, 16 November and the draws and final field will be announced on Wednesday, 18 November.

Meanwhile Oracy has been priced up at 4-1 to keep his unbeaten record intact. Stable companion Dan De Lago, who is slated to carry 55kg, is joint second favourite at 11-2 with the Ormond Ferraris-trained Magical.

Magical, who finished second to Bouquet-Garni in the SA Derby over 2450m at Turffontein, has been given a useful weight of 53kg and is sure to have many supporters. The balance of the runners are at 12-1 and better.

In my view still too short for Magical in the Charity Mile, but definitely a huge runner at the weights in the Cup.
