also a very valid point doing this makes racing robotic and punting robotic. I cannot even have a conversation now with someone because if opinion or numbers come into it i start processing outcomes whereby either way i dont lose.
It really is boring and even though i championed it a year ago i can say its not for the creative mind. Making money punting needs to be fun (for me that is) and this was toooooo much of a chore.
I dare say thought that if we had eventually scaled it up to £20k per day i might be thinking different BUT that was a long way away.

And I guess, not to get greedy ... this seems to be everybody's downfall.... make target for the day, close shop, Tomorrows another day ... seems like good advice

Here's the truth that I have observed after many years:
1. There are full time punters (not many)
2. It requires more work that you would think
3. You have to be a little connected (all of them know others, and it can be lonely)
4. You have to develop some specialisation (hard to be good at everything)
5. It's extremely difficult without some sort of float (maybe the biggest truth)
6. The emotional skills you need are: discipline, fortitude and bravery (and the ability to plough through despair sometimes); and the technical skills are a fundamental (or intuitive) understanding of value, or a stats/maths apptitute.
7. Finally, you have to pay school fees to gain the experience (like in anything else, you are better the tenth time than the first)
After all of that, it comes down to this: Anyone can find winners. Winners are in form guides, in the betting, tips from experts. Winners are everywhere. But you can't beat the takeout and the odds if you aren't decisive. Make your decision and play bigger than you are comfortable doing. The one thing about playing too big, is you stop guessing. It's a baptism of fire. Good luck.

I've read Patrick Veitch's book, he makes it sound easy at times and his main philosophy is basically backing horses that the betting market has underestimated.
But it's not as simple as that in reality. Firstly the guy's a mathematical genius as well as having the perfect temperament. Secondly he works incredibly hard and has virtually no time for anything else during the racing season except for studying and managing his betting agents. Most importantly he can only bet through his betting agents as no bookie will lay him any bet as he's a proven winner.
If you wanna make mega moola in racing the best place to do this is in Hong Kong. The racing pools are gigantic and there are plenty hedge fund type operations having a full go. Bill Benter and the late Allan Woods are 2 of the most successful exponents of the HK market. Heres a link to a great article I read a couple of years ago about their gambling exploits.

If you want very good tips for UK racing go to
www.attheraces.com
and check out the Hugh Taylor section. He's obviously not always right but seems to catch so many long shots the UK bookies automatically shorten his selections.
