always thought that the rich had brains..a bit more than the working class..
however, it seems that some rich, were just given the money..never got the brains too...
turfontein at its best is dodgy to travel around..
its ok if you going around in a 1972 vw beetle...guess they will make donations.
even the cops rob you there at night..left one night from the winners bar at turfontein..about 10:30pm
had the experience..had to throw them R200..refused to come closer to take the money from my hand...2 off duty cops..with guns..all I wanted was to lay my hand on them..they would still be locked up in the trunk of their car..
the race track give one a sense of security during the day..
vast open spaces, however behide the gates of the track it is war..
even inside the track premises, during the day, management had to revert to bouncers at the bookmakers at the marble arch..
bouncers, not security guards..the security guards are useless..
and it was not to control the lebs, but the robbers..
on a one to one basis, the robbers dont stand a chance against the lebs..
even the 6f8inch Nigerians are no match..they dont have balls..
but they have guns..robbery is the in thing...
so, now we are to bring the rich, with the fancy cars...with the rolex..diamond rings..wallet...all to one central point....and at night..sitting ducks..
at night the vast open spaces no longer exist, they no longer give you a sense of security.
in fact, together with the multiple alleys, corridors, venues, rooms, gates, buildings, the dark brings a sense of fear...
ARE WE GOING TO BE OK......
are we to leave all at the same time..in a convoy...the last ones to be the targets....
or are we to ready ourselves for a supermarket or spur style robbery...
been in the spur robbery October 2004 beyers naude northcliff/cresta
3 min..and its done..professional..army style..cops too stupid to counter..
cops dont have the same training...
who will stop them..
the security guards.
dont make me laugh..they will look the other way..
the cops..they buy the stolen goods from the robbers..
downtown jhb is a shop..pays $12000 to $15000 per kg gold jewelry, 9ct or 18 ct
they sell at LME price (about $28,000 to $30,000) less 10 % to the gold dealers
they do about 25kg per month..
why dont the guys just stop at the shop and sell the jewelry, before proceeding to turfontein..less time wasted..
as for the working class, they are so locked up in their offices, travel to work in a convoy, leave for home in a convoy, that they will never notice or experiene the reality of turfontein..
In my opinion, its only the workingclass that could think up a solution like this..night racing at TURFONTEIN...

Well thats the answer then, for those of us that grew up in Rhodesia during the war armed convoys are nothing new, just the tactics and equipment have changed. Then it was the old Datsun pickups with twin mounted browning's welded onto the back with a couple of old dodgy sandbags to help deflect landmines and RPG's. Unfortunately though the "terrorists" are the better one's trained and more disciplined now... Such a pity though as Turffontein has to be one of the best courses in the country

My mate was in Northern Ireland during the troubled times.
I spoke to him and asked "are things as bad there as we watch and hear on the TV", he said, "no everything is fine and normal, its exaggerated"
I asked him what he was doing for a living?
He said he was still in the dairy game and was a rear gunner on a milk float.

One of the reasons that a polytrack would have been a more viable solution - racing all year - Times have changed in SA - I'm more worried about coming home late at night after racing and having my house burgled/ or being hijacked on the way home than racing at Turffontein nights. Far easier just to watch from home. Also I'm not sure of the "coporate" angle - would you take your staff out on a bender on Tuesday night?
