of course no good trainer will say: this horse WILL win. if he says this, i already know, this hardly becomes true.
a good trainer rates the chances realistic. so one trainer here told my father of a horse coming back after four months break: "he is approaching his best form of life, quite good chances, that he places in this field."
and i thought: if he can place, he can win also. he won with 36 for win, 8 for place!!
i think, this was a good comment. he just said, what is possible, not what will happen. but the thing is, trainers are different. this trainer was very reliable, i knew, others are not. especially those, who love their horses too much are not reliable. they are talkin about their wishes more than about the horses...

Nice topic - The reality of the situation is that every trainer would like to believe that he has done enough to win a race in the same way I believe I will catch both Pick 6's on the morning of a Saturday's racing. Often though they are caught out by those that have prepared ever so slightly better and even more often races are lost by less than a nose, in the same way as I am. Mike Azzie is a good example of a trainer who believes in his ability and the fact that his charge can win and to his credit he is not shy to scream it from the top of every roof. He has however been let down plenty. Not his fault, its the nature of the game. Bring in the living being factor of animal and rider and you almost have a lottery.
I have been on the wrong end of a short head many a time. But that is racing. Effectively handicapping should make any even even which should make it even more of a lottery. However, is it not the greatest thing when you get it right?
I certainly can't ever blame a loss on a trainers comments. His influence ends in the saddling arena!

I like V Marshall's comments , very accurate and worth ffg , few weeks back he spoke of the horse Commodity Share did not win then but came out last time and won ,think 20/1.
Once at the track, standing in line to take a bet and find Doug Campbell in front of me backing his horse Impi Son for win and roving it for quartet
was 8/1 , changed my bets and horse duly won!!!

I can only remember one unqualified 'will win' comment on USO. No ifs, buts or maybes. It was Paddy Kruyer, the horse was Dash For Gretna. Yes, she won.

In my experience there is generally little point in listening to trainers as a guide as to whether you should be punting their horses or not.If you are seeking confirmation as to the well-being of a horse that you already fancy then hearing the trainer confirm that it has had a good prep and that the horse is working up to it's usual standard then it obviously serves it's purpose.
There are different schools of thought out there with regards to how trainers consider 'stable info'.We hear some saying that they are quite happy to let the public know what they think of their horses chances, and then others who vehemently proclaim that it is the owners right to have first bite at the betting if a horse is strongly fancied. That is why listening to trainers does not really help unless one has been doing so for years and has developed ones own interpretation of what the trainer is actually saying.Trying to determine the nuances between all of them is a task all on it's own,we are just trying to find winners here.Stables are less reliant than in the past on punting horses in order to survive. There are about 180 trainers in SA now.Obviously not all of them are big stables, but the fact that there are 180 of them doing it tells you it can't be such a bad business. They have mugs called owners who willing pay them R5000 plus per month per horse for training. It doesn't take rocket science to work out that they have a good business if they have 50+ horses in their stable, and that excludes the % of stakes that they get.The need for being successful at setting up horses for coups has long since passed, and most market moves these days are dictated by punters themselves and bookmakers.
If the horse you like looks like it's had a good prep, the course and distance it is running over is right and the betting markup is correct you should have a bet, because there is nothing more aggravating than changing your opinion due to the opinion of someone else, even if they are the trainer.
Both trainers and jockeys tend to be too subjective. They know that their horse worked well this morning or this week, but that doesn't necessarily make it good enough to win the race it is in.Opinions move markets, and having your own is the best way to capitalize on the markets.

very good thread..i agree with jap the only info i want from a trainer is the wellbeing of a horse...fit and well is good enough for me if i fancy it on form and canter past...i maintain that one of the definitions of a good trainer is how well they know their horses and where and how they will run whether it is 1st midfield or last...in 30 years of racing and having had contacts in plenty racing yards only 4 trainers qualify..2 of them legends in sa racing and the other 2 small time trainers but accurate 95 percent of the time...they might only have 15 or so wnners a year the 2 smaller trainers but when they win the prices are big and dividends handsome...

Hi All!
May I come in on a different tack?
If there is one person that impressed me with his honesty, commitment and respect for punters...that is owner Andre McDonnell (spelling correct?)
I remember meeting him during my stint on the Gauteng Gambling Board. He would never hesitate to tell all that his horse had a big chance. He was also the first to engage Lisa Presswod as a jockey when she came over; and he gave her decent rides.
I also note that he also gave chances to smaller / unknown trainers.
Just a while back, he was profiled (I think in the Racing Express). Herein, he confidently stated that a certain horse will win over the weekend- which it did at odds of circa 5/2!
This man not only knows his stock, but also interacts with his trainer/s.
The trainer who also impressed me (unfortunately his horses let him down many a time!) is Ian Jayes who would talk to anyone that wanna listen!
A trainer/owner's input (honest) can help punters (and other owners, trainers, jockeys, etc) anytime; we all know that there is no certainty in racing, but, inside info on wellbeing helps inexorably!
Over to you for a good discussion/topic!
Amandla to punters and owners!

hi magic
I recall another incident, which for me, revolutionised Tellytrack interviews.
Was regards a horse called Special Parade on Summer Cup day.horse was claimed the previous day.
Clyde Basel barked at Gentleman G ' will this Horse win or not"! ...won in a small field.
As a punter,I thrive on these interviews. Its taken me a while to sift out those that I can trust. This was done by gauging comments against performance.
The Top trainers are sincere.

Webber gave us in vaal today a good example: often, when a trainer is TOO convinced - be aware!!!
lets add him to the unreliables!
