This thread is good reading thanks for the contributions.

I would say that I have never been a good punter however my best days have been on the July, if I look at the previous winners this has been a great race for me and even when I was a bookie for 2 years Space Walk was given the race...........and I bought a swimming pool and entertainment area CASH!

Look forward to next week, but first time in many years dont have a strong fancy

keep them coming!

I remember now - I was a Kapil fan last year - not such a bad selection but looking back at that field compared to this year, 2009 was not the greatest of years for this prestigious race www.formgrids.co.za/subscriber/fgRaceRes...x?rn=2009-07GE930,ZA

for me has to be the diminutive TEAL in 1995 for Pat Shaw, he won the SA Guineas and Daily News 2000 on way to victory in the July, was a superb little horse with a huge heart, and was my 1st bet on the July (of legal age!! B)

It was Spanish Galliard who won the July in 1992, which was the year of the Barcelona Olympics.:)-D

Elvis, I don't know if Olympic Duel was in the field but a big roughie trained by Terry Lowe finished second. I think his name was East-something?

Eastbrook rings a bell.

Olympic Duel won Gr1 Champion Stakes early as a 5yo on disqualification of Spanish Galliard, who'd carried her off a straight course.
She got colic subsequently and had another brush with death.
Reappeared in May '92, and regained best form in the July when third to Spanish Galliard, who set a new course record (2m 12.9s), and Eastbrook.
She was equally impressive at the weights when 4th in the Gr1 Mainstay a few weeks later (beating Flaming Rock a length at level weights).
