We had some nice rain last night which should take a little bit of the sting out the ground, but expect course to still be good. Possible light tail wind later on.
Race 1: No selection
Race 2: Santa Clara is a decent 3yo and ran up to her 97 rating in the Guineas. She needs to improve a bit to win this and I certainly won’t be taking odds on. ( Helen’s Ideal ran just behind her in the Guineas and was allowed to start at 10/1 against similar opposition last week, but running off a 91, so 3kg to the good!) The Kotzen 2 must be respected.
Race 3: Captain Carlos the best of the raced runners, but money has come for Miraculously Ours. There are a couple of lightly raced runners that could show big improvement, but these 2 enough for PA.
Race 4: Hurricane Silva much improved last time and a repeat of that run will win. Possible banker. Louisa May is coming along the right way and is the danger. Petite Bijou should improve this trip.
Race 5: Dubula faded tamely last time but had fair earlier form. Amazing Satchmo good debut, running on from the back. Var Express also good debut and will improve.
Race 6: Secret Depths is overdue her second win, and I hope that she can pull it off today. Nastergal is a decent sort and will challenge. Fortune Flies is running off a rating that looks too low and the 3kg she gets from these two make her competitive. Perfect Air I think the best of the older fillies and only half a length to find on Nastergal on their last meeting.
Race 7: Hoping for a double with Elusive Victor, but unfortunately gets a tough draw. Won a good race last time, and not overly punished by the handicapper. St Vladimir also on the upgrade, and has a much better draw. Spirit Of Song also nice draw and should continue to improve. I will side with the 3yos but 3,9,10 all hard knocking older horses. Harvest Wind has been very disappointing- now off a very low rating. If he does not improve here then must go to a weaker centre.
Race 8: Mushi Sterek very impressive debut and should win again. Snapscan looks a smart sort and is ew value. Gimme London also plenty scope for improvement.
Race 9: Very open handicap. Shortlist 1,4,5,6,8,11,14

Cape trainers don't seem to be the best judges with their babies.
Odds on shots beaten plenty times and less fancied stable companions coming out and winning.

When the Snaith stable have a go on their juveniles, the money is normally spot-on. Outside of Marshall and Drier, then i feel the others let their babies run on ability alone.

Running a yard’s first two year olds of the season can be a nervewracking exercise for a trainer.

In 70 seconds it can be a case of determining whether it’s all duck or no dinner for the next 12 months.

Joey Ramsden – no ducking or diving

Training racehorses. It’s not the world’s number one profession for the faint hearted by any stretch of the imagination.

Joey Ramsden, the man who has taken R20 000 yearling Twist Of Fate to earnings of close on R900 000 in nine months, and teeters on the brink of the R5 million CTS 1600 in a fortnight, steps out his first babies of the new term.

He is a man who knows that resting on the laurels doesn’t pay the bills and reinventing the wheel of fortune has to happen every new season.

“I’m more nervous when running my first 2yo’s of the season than saddling the odds-on favourite for the Queen’s Plate! You know in 70 odd seconds if it’s going to be all duck or no dinner for the next 12 months – or worse!” chirps the charismatic Englishman, as he fields our invasive digging for information on his first-timers.

He has engaged Anton Marcus to ride the R350 000 National Yearling Sale Var filly Ibra. The jockey booking already trims the price and Var never hurts in the baby races. We have also seen that a good 2yo filly often has the edge on a good 2yo colt.

“Ibra goes well. And having Anton (Marcus) aboard always helps. My Twice Over colt Double Alliance is a nice sort and more  than capable,” he adds. Not a bad buy at R150 000 off the Cape Premier Yearling Sale last year – by the sire of the moment.

“The thing is we hear whispers but we don’t know really who we are up against. But I really do enjoy my duck, so one holds thumbs that both mine will be right thereabouts!” he smiles.
