After a long battle with serious illness, prominent owner Jack Mitchell passed away at home in Cape Town at the age of 73 on Sunday,

MAY 13, 2019
Mr Mitchell’s black and white silks have become very familiar to race goers over the years, most recently in conjunction with greats like Legislate and Futura, who both became stallions, and the filly Snowdance who is still in training.

There was also exciting Frankel colt General Franco waiting in the wings.

He often raced in partnership with his daughter Nancy Hossack

But it was way back in 1977 that he first became an owner.

That was Young Captain from the National Yearling Sale.

He cost a mere R5000, but went on to win a Grade 1 race, among his 14 overall victories.

Jack’s grandfather, William Charles Winshaw, was an American medical doctor who came to South Africa during the Anglo Boer War. He founded Stellenbosch Farmers’ Winery in 1924, and remained the MD until 1962, when he retired at the age of 92.

His father Wally Mitchell, who also served as the MD at SFW, married William’s daughter Nancy. As a result Jack grew up in Stellenbosch.

After completing his schooling at Paul Roos and Bishops, he graduated from UCT with B.Comm.

His career was spent in investments and stockbroking with the likes of Fergusson Bros, Old Mutual and Allan Grey.

Jack Mitchell was a true lover of horse racing, and will be sorely missed.

No wonder he owned so many top horses, SFW shares paid for them. Lived a great life!

A true stalwart who, as an owner, enjoyed success at the highest level for more than 40 years!! His presence will be sorely missed and if Lady In Black were to win the VDJ - in his colours - I do not believe that anyone who truly enjoys the Sport of Horseracing will do anything but toast the memory of its greatest supporters!! RIP Jack!!
