The reality is that the short sightedness of closing down Flamingo Park has now set in and we all going through the 7 stages of grief we can move on a bit from the emotional shock and look at some really practical solutions

1: Without a doubt we need a sand track in SA
2: Without a doubt the track in Kimberley is actually quite consistent
3: Without a doubt Kimberley's climate would allow for almost guaranteed racing 3 days a week without fear of weather disruption
4: Without a doubt there is a VAST area around the racecourse
5: Without a doubt 200-300 new stables could be built there
6: Without a doubt by investing money it could be turned into a 100 day a year racing venue
7: Without a doubt by improving the programme a better class of horse will be deployed there
8: Without a doubt the product will be popular to be sold abroad as eventually it will be a really consistent racing venue
9: Without a doubt a hotel could be built there
10: Without a doubt full time professionals could reside full time in Kimberley (jocks-steps etc)
11: Without a doubt lights could be erected for twilight / evening meetings
12: Without a doubt if there was even the smallest chance of buying the racecourse and being allowed to do the above myself i would be trying to raise funds....if there was the smallest chance of being a stand alone from Phumelela it would be a success Without a Doubt

Morning easy and thanks for a new outlook.
I gather Phum owns ?
Do they have a buyer, what is the price and what is the plan for the area.
I understand the Chinese are buying most of African, so they could be interested in a ready made racetrack with everything already in place.
Who would run the track?
Who would run the betting?

Its a bit early for the brain cells and on my way to visit some stables , plus vet bills dont allow me much sleep.

Interesting times ......

Demand vs Supply, Easy ?
1)Who wants to stay in a Hotel there ?
2)Turnover- how ? From where?
3)What costs to get the live feeds onto TV?
4)Maintenance costs?
5)If running at a loss with 36 meetings a year, how does 100 meetings a year make it more profitable ?

Basically, those are the challenges, IMHO.

Racing Countrywide is not surviving on local turnover, which continues to decline. If it were not for the Overseas market who buy our Racing and our share of Sports Betting, we would be Racing for a pie and Coke...

Well said Louis. I was just going to ask Easy where he thinks the stakes are going to come from? And how exactly are punters ( if there are any who would truly punt there 3 days a week ) going to bet? I for one would not be punting at Kimberly 3 days a week with all the other meetings available. And I'm not sure what good another hotel would do for racing. Just my opinion of course.

If i gave you R10 could you open up a Nando's?
Clearly not but yet a Nando's franchise is a successful business.
Products can be successful but without the correct investment they cannot succeed.
Running a business at a loss is NOT a bad idea provided its part of a PLAN (Uber)

1: The demand can be created with a correctly run business ( ill put on maidens for R150k restricted to local horses - remember ill be building 200 new barns)
2: Ill sort out tun over by doing deals with foreign entities and ill deliver a product that is so robust (like HK) that locals will demand to punt on there
3: Ill NEVER publish 1 single dividend - my clients will have to trust our integrity BUT but doing that ill stop the open bet as the parasites won't be able to pay out as they won't have a reference.
4: I worked on TV and I'm sure i can get SKY to buy into 3 race meetings a week provided certain criteria are met
5: Im almost sure the maintenance costs are lower that a turf track but those costs will be in the business plan so i don't really care what they are
6: I would have a burn fund for building the correct business , luring in the correct animal human etc.

Its a great place to race, a great place to LIVE (crime) the schools are power, there is no traffic the weather is hot, yearly rainfall is negligible.....

Prediction.. unless racing is managed differently in SA it will either be taken away from Phumulela/Gold Circle or it will collapse

Purple Capital already tried and that project folded quickly - possibly because the timing was wrong and the writing on the wall that we can clearly see today was nothing more than an indiscriminate scribble. Maybe attitudes would be different now and a feasible solution could be sought or maybe the industry has finally exiled and invalidated itself.

There is a meeting with WC Owners and Trainers next week ... presumably to discuss Durbanville and the longevity of racing in the province, but considering recent developments, it's unlikely anyone can stop the wrecking ball that is the RA et al.

A sure way to bankruptcy.
Who wants to go and watch the worst horses in South Africa run around a track in the middle of nowhere?

Think we all need to hang in there for now Oscar.
Probably surprising to a lot of people to learn that Sport Pesa acquired shares in the Ithotho Totalisator Licence that's been floating around for the last few years - but who knows when that will launch or what the impact would be at this late stage. My guess is ... very little.

If it gets to the stage that our only hope lies with Easy, then we can start panicking.

J... you remember Bellas in it's hey day - anyone mad enough to have bought it in 1994 would now have to be a Nyopi Dealer to survive - Bury the walking dead - no amount of Narcan can save this thing - The poor relative of mainstream racing was never supported or promoted and has walked on dead legs for far too long - Pity that the rest of Racing is being measured for coffin clothes as we speak
