Rebel’s Champ lands Lebelo

Rebel’s Champ appears to be a sprinter who’s going places following his smashing victory in the final feature race of 2018, the Grade 3 Lebelo Sprint over 1000m, at Turffontein on Saturday.

Trainer Paul Peter’s four-year-old gelding completed a hat-trick with his 0.30-length defeat of Prince Of Kahal, and made it five wins in seven starts since mid-June. It was his eighth win in a 20-race career thus far – showing the son of Rebel King to be one of the most improved horses in training.

Jockey Carlos Herrera Gomez’s driving Peruvian style of riding got an electrifying finishing burst out of Rebel’s Champ, who started as the 3-1 favourite despite having to carry top weight of 60kg.

Prince Of Kahal was the 4-1 second favourite, while Rivarine, well fancied in the ante-post betting, drifted to 6-1 on the day and finished third, with 36-1 outsider Isphan in fourth.
