C&C

One interesting fact came out during the final day of transfers...

Owen and other ex players said on Sky, Twitter etc., ....
Contrary to believe (yours included), is that United can still attract the top players even though they are not in Europe.

The above was my view and stated somewhere on ABC ....that money talks.

Englander wrote: Dave, once again lol your memory is extremely selective, and if not selective, then just wrong :) I have never mocked those clubs for spending big, I have simply questioned their "right" to be referred to as big clubs so quickly when they have become "competitive" primarily, if not completely, due to hugely wealthy owners buying the clubs and barely having a care about the amounts they spend. Same could probably have happened at 10, 20 other British clubs. United's money, as you have repeatedly pointed out because of the huge debts the owners have brought with them, comes from the proceeds generated by the football club. Obviously, that is a huge difference. I have also said that any club who turned away owners such as the ones now in place at Chelsea and City would be stupid and it would be equally stupid not to use the money they are prepared to spend, I have never had any issue with that, provided of course that the club doesn't collapse if those owners pulled out tomorrow. But, in that regard, anyone who says to me that they have not bought success I would say was talking out of a drunkard's @rse :) And yes, I would most definitely say United are trying to buy their way back into being a competitive team again but 1. the money comes from the football club and 2. they had little choice imo and whether you call it desperation or something else, the fact remains that United's squad prior to the spending spree was simply not good enough. I am all for home grown players, youth systems etc but the bar set by City and Chelsea is so high at the moment that you would need the likes of another batch of Giggs, Scholes, Neville etc coming through to have any chance. As CnC says I think Welbeck might do well at Arsenal, he will need to fine tune his finishing skills though, but he was not going to oust RVP or Rooney etc so it was inevitable. These young lads have to be good enough and sadly for the lads that came through most recently, they weren't. Would any of them get a starting position, or even a bench slot, at Chelsea or City. Unlikely imo so if United want to be competitive again it really was the only option currently available to them, even now success is far from guaranteed and VG has a big challenge on his hands. Watch this space still remains my outlook.

Engles, come back To The Bridge,it's not to late to change your team again.
I remember you saying you used to go to Chelsea, you would be welcome with open arms in The Shed End.

Was in The Shed end a few times Dave, was where I watched the 4-3 come back versus Bolton. The new East Stand was tried a couple of times but we didn't like it much in there, the old West Stand was our usual haunt. Not been back since a few lads decided to use me for kicking practice. Won't be going again.

Amazing,I was at that game.3-1 down with about 8 minutes to go.
A lot of the measly crowd had left, think it was under 10000.

Engles, that Bolton game was a night game during school time.I remember because I was only allowed to go if my older brother took me and it was my first season of going to games.it was 1978 and I was 12.
Now I don't know how old you was,but surely that was a long day for someone coming from Sussex.
Are we talking about the same game?

Remember it as a Saturday Dave but was eons ago. Can only think it must have been half-term or similar! 78 yes. Sussex no as I have told you a 100 times lol

0-3 at half-time and Chelsea didn't score until Tommy "the SA race horse owner" Langley scored in the 75th minute, not sure thereafter. Was an exciting last 15 though that's for sure. especially as I am pretty sure they hadn't started the season on fire

Chelsea had a pretty loyal fan base back in those days (apart from me n me Dad of course lol), I remember at Ipswich one time singing the old Chel-sea, Chel-sea, Chel-sea, Chel-sea for almost a complete half. Lost of course lol
