always wondered how much can actually be read from the gallops, some trainers in the past have just let there horse do a mild trot. Hopefully this year they're used for what they're supposed to be?

July gallops - trick question
How far is it from the 800 metre mark to the 400 metre mark?
Judging from the times they're quoting for the gallops, it's a bit less than the distance from the 400 metre mark to the finish, whatever that is!
Some (most?) of the horses are running faster times from the 800 to 400 than from the 400 to finish. Not only that, but they're running that stretch at a pace that would leave J J struggling to keep up...
Just run now...
Vertical Takeoff
73.02 (1200 to fin)
47.47 (800 to fin)
26.57 (400 to fin)
47.47-26.57=20.90 (800 to 400)
Yeah, right!

Gallops times
800-fin 400-fin (800-400) Horse
47.69 24.22 (23.47) Pocket Power & Fort Vogue
46.88 25.38 (21.50) Rudra & Lizarre
46.81 25.88 (20.93) Fabiani
46.97 23.75 (23.22) Irish Flame
44.53 24.22 (20.31) Bold Silvano
46.00 23.43 (22.57) Orbison
48.35 26.29 (22.06) Red Rake
46.63 23.97 (22.66) Ancestral Fore & Happy Valley
45.97 24.03 (21.94) River Jetez
46.35 25.34 (21.01) Aslan
46.62 24.03 (22.59) Captain Scott
46.94 24.97 (21.97) Russian Sage
48.25 24.13 (24.12) Flying Tristram
47.47 26.57 (20.90) Vertical Takeoff
According to this, every single one of these July gallopers ran faster from the 800 to 400 than from the 400 to finish. Clearly that's totally ridiculous, so take from this list what you will. Not that it matters since weights are unknown and effort levels varied.
For interest sake, the average 400-fin time was 24.72 (median 24.22), while the average for 800-400 was about a dozen lengths quicker at 22.09 (median 22.02).

Yes, Fort Vogue galloped with Pocket Power (edited my table). I thought that Pocket Power looked to have Fort Vogue's measure. Fayd'Herbe barely moved on him.

No, Fort Vogue didn't gallop with Pocket Power.
He tried, but didn't manage it.

I watched a bit this morning - don't think times really tell the story, but the 400-finish is a pointer imo; less than 24 secs probably what is needed; but watching the horses I thought Pocket Power very impressive (he now gets into my 'B' group) while Fort Vogue was disappointing - he really struggled to keep up with PP and Bernard was really sitting with a double handful. Orbison moved very well; same applies to Bold Silvano, Russian Sage while Irish Flame and Happy Valley put up good 400-finish times.Others were 'workmanlike; in my view - except for Red Rake and Vertical Takeoff who could finish last and 2nd last if they repeat this gallop in the race
