titch..what has happenned to greyville....it used to have one of the best drainage systems in the world....the excuse is the tote board..and it doesn't allow for sun at the pull up area.....that tote board has been there ever since...howcome in the days gone by...it never was affected....somethings transpired at greyville....for a meeting to be washed out at greyville was virtually unheard of....now it seems...even heavy due..and the meeting is in jeopardy..reminds me of cricket.............time to invest a million and get the covers on..

All weather track would help. However, it's not the Tote board which has affected the pull-up area. That has indeed been there since forever, but it's the relatively new wing of boxes on the grandstand. The combined effect of the two is that the pull-up zone doesn't get a whole lot of sun/

There is more to it than that, and I also agree that the drainage generally probably isn't what it used to be, but you have to understand that the rain we've had in the past 11 days or so was abnormal. Most of it was caused by a cyclone, something which affects Durban once in a few decades on average, so these are exceptional circumstances.

It is also true that these abnormalities are happening more and more and this climate change issue would appear to have had an affect on Natal racing particularly, for the last couple of years.
The problem for racing is they need to find a solution to the problem of being totally beholden to the weather otherwise people will inevitably shift to more reliable passtimes.
I am not sure that "All-weather" is the answer..............all weather in SA will mean something different to elsewhere if history is anything to go by............fair weather fellows, our boys!

mathew..when we speak of deluges...i keep going back to the day of RIGHT PREROGATIVE winning the july...and if that was precedent set ...then just about any day is raceable...for me...and i know i am not qualified in this subject...but will say anyway...the WILL to race has been lost..because that day...there was a will to race

Yes, well, July day does rather change the way people look at these things I suppose, compared to a humdrum meeting. Which isn't really right, but I suppose it's human nature.

I am sure we as "punters" get upset when a meeting is called off, however the owners, trainers, jockeys and OPERATORS are the last people that want to make this call, so I am sure EVERYTHING possible takes place before they have to make the dreaded call.

Ps if this was caused by bad forward planning that is another issue.
