Any tips from the racing guru's? I'm trying to improve my profitability in this area.

Maiden plates i find using formgrids especially useful, to see the strength of runs.
Also the trainer is a factor...the likes of MDK, Woody, Drier will have them tuned up fairly earlier on than others.
So if a horse from (for arguments sake) MDK and Eudey/Goodman run a short head from one another, you'd usually find more improvement coming from the "smaller" trainer (if i can say that with no disrespect).
Also, watching the replays is vital, to judge whether or not a horse was green, how well did it run on, what sort of distance is it looking for etc.
Backing first timers over 1000m is a lot more profitable than over 1400/1600m for example, as natural speed can get them to the line first, where as over the further distances they usually need more experience (settling, going around the turn etc).
Look at a horses breeding as well, sometimes punters are stuck out as they do not back a horse over 1000m, because the breeding suggests 2000m+, and first time out the horse runs a short head second at 50/1...next time its priced up fav at 15/10, and run off the board. I generally find this as being horses that need ground run one fresh sprint, and then prove they need the ground.
Another factor is to look at those "punting" stables. As one cannot get a lot of money on a first timer, sometimes these quality horses get backed in heavily as betting comes out, then start to drift like a barge on raceday. Next time out the money floods in again and carries on firming till the jump, and the horse comes home lonely. (I'll reserve my comments as to why this happens thou).
These are generally the boxes i like to have checked before i punt maidens (which i find the easiest way to make money).

Look for horses that have already had a run and how their counterparts from those races have performed. for 1st timers watch the betting.

Betting is the worst guide to find the really hot 1st or 2nd timer......too many clueless trainers sending them out for a look see and win or run close up at huge odds......I go on breeding and if they miss 1st time "do not feature" get better odds next time.....case in point the improved run of Royal Nisha yesterday......:
....she may well flop next time out.....and breeding suggests she needs further.....:S

John Sweet wrote a book called something like "Making Money from Maidens". I never bought nor read the book just thought you might be interested. His website

maiden races over sprints
check breeding and if horse was supported previous start .
if superman or striker get back on a maiden after riding it once or twice(at the most) before and getting back on,put the money down
maiden races 1400m +
never back a first timer ,1% chance of winning ,no matter what odds.
If Striker or Superman on nr 1-5 in a race ,90% chance of a place , put money down on place and small wins
Hope it help you, helping me for many years

Not knowing breeding, i have to watch betting. My limited experience tells me when a horse moves close to the off its stable money. I try look at the dames other foals and if they ran well and at what distance and witg what trainer and course etc, but it all gets confusing. I pretty much play the place bet if the race has 1st timers.
