Thieves have stolen the tote takings at one of the Vodacom Durban July hospitality marquees on Saturday, the Daily News reported after talking with sources on Sunday.

It is still not clear exactly how much money the thieves got away with, but Gold Circle confirmed the theft and said that an investigation was under way, the paper said.

Daily News reported that one of their journalists was leaving the VIP marquee at the Miller Boomtown venue on the opposite side of the main grandstand at 21:00 on Saturday, when a commotion broke out and race goers started talking about missing money.

A spokesperson for the venue was unable to go into details on Sunday, but confirmed that money was stolen from the tote.

Daily News says that there were several marquees and a stage at Miller Boomtown, one of the largest venues at the race. Tote kiosks were placed in the marquees at Greyville to enable people to bet.

attention to detail isn't GCs strong point.

I wonder why large amounts of money would still be around at 21:00............seems a bit risky............or an inside job!
