Vaal Sand Jottings
11 years 10 months ago
As ever, please post your comments on the daily thread rather than here. Hope they help...
RACE 1
1 STILLALIABILITY - Sand debut. Breeding suggests possibility of taking to the surface but shown little in 5 turf runs and drawn in 1
2 BERRYFIELDS - Yet to place in 4 c runs and best effort was over 1200
3 WENDY MAE - GVZ/Strydom. Sand debut. Runner-up in last 2 turf runs both over the d and big chance if taking to the surface. Nothing in breeding says she will definitely take to the surface but trainer usually very decent with sand runners though perhaps not in the best form recently. Drawn low in 3.
4 CROWN BEARER - Sand debut. Obvious chance if taking to the surface with top 3 finishes in all 4 turf d runs with winners coming from those runs. Nothing in breeding says she will like the sand though. Drawn high
5 ALL THE TENS - Pettigrew/Lerena. Blinkers off after disappointing run last time when out of the top 3 for the first time in 4 c/d runs. Runner up in both rides under Lerena but little franking of the form and is drawn low in 2
6 STAGE ATTRACTION - Usually not too far off and was 1.5l behind ATT in the race won by Seattle Fairy. Drawn high and has a chance of reversing that form,
7 SWEET HARLEM - Much improved last time out from a low draw when finishing 2.75l ahead of ATT and is now 1.5kgs better off. ATT did have the blinkers on that day though and on their previous meeting ATT was 8.15l ahead of SH. Drawn high and if confirming improvement could feature.
8 HILLARY - Unplaced in 2 c runs and seems well held by ATT
9 WIND UP BIRD - Well beaten on sand debut and looks held by ATT. Appie takes weight off and ok draw in 7 but hard to see form reversal
12 GOLDSWIRL - Magner. Debut. Appie takes weight off and good draw in 10 but no indicator to say she will definitely like the surface
13 MARTINI BLU - Slow away in last 2 and well beaten on c debut. Decent draw but hard to make a winning case for her
14 RUNNING SENSATION - Debut. Breeding suggests possibility of taking to the surface and Chambers up. Low draw in 4
15 SEATTLE RYTHM - Pettigrew/MVR. Debut. Breeding suggests she may well take to the surface and has found some market support. Decent draw in 8
16 WALDERIE - Reported lame after being well beaten on sand debut coming off a rest. 90/1 outsider that day though and unlikely to feature
17 SHARDUL - Sand debut. Poor turf form and nothing in breeding says she will like the sand
18 RIVER PRINCESS - Sand debut. Poor turf form and nothing in breeding says she will like the sand
CROWN BEARER x SEATTLE RYTHM x STAGE ATTRACTION
RACE 2
1 ROYAL TASKA - Strydom up and on 3rd run after a rest. Two decent sand efforts, beaten 5l over 1200 when drawn widest of 11 and finishing strongly last time out over 1450 was beaten only 0.25l with the third 7l back. Drawn 9 but a good chance
2 HUNT THE STARS - Over 20l behind RT last time and even with the blinkers removed a form reversal would need some justification considering his one third in 4 c runs and has yet to be within 12l of the winner and the 12 draw not likely to assist much
3 BLACK MAGIC WOMEN - Yet to place in 4 c runs and 3.6l behind RT when meeting over 1200. Hard to see the required improvement happening
4 SHIRLA - Pettigrew/MVR. Two silvers and 2 heavy defeats in 4 c runs, cast a shoe in the latest defeat though and also wore blinkers that day. Drawn 8 and a chance if at best
5 MERCEDES - Beaten a minimum of 15l in 3 c visits and hard to envisage the necessary improvement coming from draw 14
6 NOBLE WIND - Seemingly improved with a fast finishing 3rd on the turf on Tuesday.. The shame is that run has led to market support, he may have been worth an idiot's e/w otherwise. One third in 6 c visits but is probably better than the bare form suggests having come up against some capable sand performers. Drawn 10 and probably won't be involved unless the price drifts back out.
7 BOBBY BAKER - Well beaten on sand debut and trainer form not strong. Good draw and breeding suggests he may be better than that first effort but will have to show it first.
8 SILVANO`S ANGEL - Sand debut. Slow away and reported not striding in two seemingly poor turf runs. Chambers up but little in the breeding to suggest she will take to the surface. Drawn 11 and 32 week rest does not make the 18/1 look appealing, R1 e/w might be possible at treble that price!
9 FRENCH APPROVAL - Respectable silver on sand debut with 4 others behind, one of which was Shirla but she had excuses, the other three are unlikely to feature here. Nearly 20l behind RT last time out over 1450 from a wide draw, even with a much improved 3 draw here it is hard to see a form reversal.
10 CALYPSO GIRL - Third on sand debut almost 7l behind RT but well ahead of others in this field. Form reversal highly unlikely but place possibilities.
11 MONSOON WIND - 4th on sand debut over 1450 only 3.75l behind runner-up Cherise Silk. CS being the horse that pipped RT with CG 7l further back. MW time though was much slower than that of CG. MW was on 2nd run after a rest but she did little in follow-up turf run and is drawn 13 here. At the prices has place bet potential, currently 18/1 while CG is half that price.
12 BREEZED IN - Sand debut. Appie takes weight off, drawn 1 and breeding suggests a possibility that she will take to the sand. Up in distance. Another where if the price drifts it might generate a little idiot interest.
13 SABOLA - well beaten on sand debut and despite a better draw hard to envisafe the necessary improvement will be forthcoming
14 THE LIGHT HOUSE - Azzie/Woodruff. Sand debut. This combination is 27% for wins and 49% for places and thus must be respected. Had an 18 week rest following a fair turf debut when slowly away and if taking to the surface must have a fair chance from the 5 draw
ROYAL TASKA x SHIRLA x NOBLE WIND
RACE 3
1 KALAMATA BABY - Pettigrew/MVR. Sand debut. Some ok turf runs but nothing in bringing to suggest he will take to the surface. Drawn high in 15
2 VODKA ROCKS - Showed little on sand debut when coming off a 20 week rest and choking up in running. Improved on the turf last time following a 42 week rest but a watching brief for me
3 SANS LIMITES - SJG/Lerena. Improved over 1000 last time following two poor runs over 1600 and 1450. Did better over 1400 on turf in between. Last two with blinkers and has been gelded since last run. Drawn in 1 and stable returning to form as has the jockey.
4 CHAPEL OF LOVE - 2nd run after a rest and though occasionally puts in an ok turf performance was well beaten on both sand runs and not been seen on the surface for a year. Drawn 16 and unlikely.
5 BANJO BAY - Khumalo takes the ride and trainer also in form. 3 3rds in 5 c runs and has been running on in recent runs over 1200. Ok draw in 6. Chance.
6 HOBB`S FLIGHT - Somewhat inconsistent. Seven top 3s in 23 c runs (3/12 c/d). 2nd last time out in a poor field over 1600, drawn 11 and has not been the best starter recently.
7 SADDLE BAGS - Trainer and appie in form but two poor runs on the surface and finished 4l back of HF in penultimate run over 1600. Not had the best of draws but that continues here in 13
8 THE BUCKET BOY - 1l behind HF last time out on 2nd c run. Better drawn in 5 and Brown takes over from the appie but was well beaten on other sand run and will probably need improvement to feature
9 FORT DIXY - well beaten both c starts, turf form form, drawn 10 and though appie takes weight off it is hard to think he will be involved
10 SELDOM SEEN KID - well beaten all 4 course starts, poor trainer form, 2nd run after a rest, drawn well but should not be involved at the finish
11 POWER REPORT - Beaten 50l on sand debut when HF second. No obvious reason to suggest that form was all wrong
12 NEWS FLASH - Not the worst form in the field in his 2 c runs but does have 7.5l to find with WIshful Heart, is better drawn this time but still hard to see a form reversal
14 WISHFUL HEART - Goosen/Strydom. Decent sand debut when 2nd over c/d and PS takes the ride on 3rd run after a rest. Ok draw in 7 and has a chance
15 MAYBE BABY - 7 top 3s in 20 c runs but recent efforts have been poor and is drawn in 14. Drops to a distance he is 2/5 for top 3s on c/d but hard to see him winning
WISHFUL HEART x SANS LIMITES x BANJO BAY
RACE 4
1 TRENDY BABE - GVZ/Lerena. Sand debut. Won maiden over 1400 on turf but not done much since. Nothing in breeding says she will be one to take to the sand but stable to be respected and is drawn in poll
2 DANIELLE - Succession of poor draws is continued here with the 16 box. Ran respectably in penultimate sand effort but is 0/4 top 3 in 4 c visits and from the draw is likely to struggle
3 ZENA`S OWN - Is 1-1-1 in 7 c visits and tries the distance for the first time. Not convinced she will stay, wo runs since coming out the maidens do not inspire confidence and the 11 draw won't help. Chance but unlikely
4 SUMMER SARI - Overall c record of 2-2-1 in 17 visits and is 1-0-0 in 7 over c/d but found improvement in last three and PS is up. 5 of the 16 from her penultimate c run (1600) have won since. Drawn 10 but last won 364 days ago over 1200 on the c with PS up so maybe this is her time of year, if recent runs can be repeated then has a chance
5 THE ANGELUS - Won maiden over c/d but well beaten in each of her 3 visits since and not achieved much on turf either. On 2nd run after a rest and drawn 12 so not much to recommend
6 WOUNDED KNEE - GVZ. Sand debut. 2nd run after a rest from sprints and now up in distance. A little in the breeding suggests she might take to the surface and is drawn well in 3. Has a lot of ?s to answer but exactly the infuriating type that could surprise, not tempted at the current price but might nibble if she drifts from the current 18s
7 SWEET CANDY - Pettigre/MVR. Can't fathom how a horse beaten 25l on her only sand run and is drawn 13 can open up at 5/1. That said, she has a decent sand sire, a combo to be respected and usually not to far off in her turf runs so a chance she will improve but at the price I'll be looking elsewhere
8 PIGEON POWER - Fradd. Has run respectably on both c visits when drawn poorly over 1600. Finished 4.75l behind SS last time and gets a 3.5kg pull to go with a turnaround in draw, she also finished 1.4l ahead of SS on her sand debut when both drawn high and is 1kg better off now. Concern is that the distance keeps dropping but then again, she may appreciate it
9 MOONRIVER MAGIC - One second in 5 c runs and, at a glance, reading does little to excite. However, appie takes weight off and she now carries 7.5kgs less than when 7th to Velvet Jar over 1200 on her last c visit at this level. She lost 3l that day (she does not have a history of slow starts so hopefully it was a one-off) and was only beaten 5.5l. She was 6.5l ahead of the 8th and 4 of the 6 who finished infront of her have won since. Chance
10 IZAANAZAMA - Spies. Last two runs have been at Kimberley and here and well beaten both times. Good draw in 2 and on 3rd run after a rest, tries the distance but not one that there is too much about to recommend
11 KIWI ISLAND - Fairly consistent at Bingo but not placed in 3 runs on this c or at the d, drawn ok in 5 but likely to find it difficult at this d
12 SUCHA WONDER - Is 0-2-1 in 16 c/d runs and drawn 14. Occasionally puts in a half-decent run but looks well held by SS and PP in the run behind E Bay over 1600
13 SPIRITOFAMPHITRITE - 3 3rds in 7 c rins but yet to find the top 3 in 6 d runs. Khumla jumps aboard but even he might struggle to get this one to trouble the judge from a draw of 15
14 DYING THUNDER - out of the top 3 in all 4 c runs and though not disgraced has not been close enough either to suggest he will improve sufficiently to win here
SUMMER SARI x PIGEON POWER x MOONRIVER MAGIC
RACE 5
1 STAR VOYAGER - Yet to finish in the top 3 in 10 c visits and recent form appears poor. can see no reason for a sudden form return and is also drawn in the 1 box which over the 1000 is not usually where you want to be
2 COUNTESS GRACE - Sand debut. Won maiden last time out and well drawn in 8 but nothing to suggest she will take to the surface and a watching brief for me
3 BOUJIS - Seems a little inconsistent but is 1-0-1 in 4 c/d runs. Won penultimate start (beating 5 of these rivals) when fitted with the blinkers and last time out was running against much stronger. In with a definite chance again but the low-ish draw of 5 probably won't aid her chances
4 MELLI MOU - Pettigrew/MVR. Performed well on the sand with her maiden win (2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th have all won since) followed by two 3rds. In the penultimate run she managed 3rd over 1200 despite a high draw and jumping awkwardly (4th and 5th have won since). Ok draw of 7 and a big runner.
5 SHIVER `N SHAKE - Magner/Khumalo. 1-1-0 in her 2 c runs finishing 0.5l behind Boujis after winning her maiden and is now 0.5kg better off with that rival. Drawn in 6 and though that could be better has an obvious chance
6 STYLING - Shock winner of her maiden 2 runs back but in her other 2 c runs she has been soundly beaten. Nervous with the inconsistency but should be unlikely
7 EXTRAORDINAIRE - Mich improved since the blinkers were applied 3 runs back. Not placed in her 2 c runs. Was 3.25l behind Boujis last time out and with the appie claim is now 3kgs worse off. Does go from the 12 box though and has the draw swing in her favour. Not to be overlooked
8 SCARLET VEIL - Beaten 0.55l by Boujis on c debut and is now 0.5kg better off. Another though who goes from high to low with the draw though, runs from 4
9 SHREYA`S ANGEL - won maiden last time out on her 3rd c run, that was over 1200 and not convinced the drop in trip is ideal. Decent draw in 9 but unlikely for me to be troubling the judge
10 SIOUX SHE - Spies/Chambers. Supported winner of her maiden last time out at Bingo when blinkers re-applied. Well beaten on her only only visit here though and might struggle to feature from the 2 box
11 COUNTESS BACARDI - 2kgs better off with Boujis for 5.5l but did stumble that day. and though another with a swing in draw, goes from 5 to 11 and being on 3rd run after a rest, she has an overall c record of 0-1-2 in 11 runs and hard to see the form being reversed
12 SPANISHLILY- On 3rd run after a rest but only one 3rd in 5 c/d runs and will need to show improvement before a betting proposition
MELLI MOU x BOUJIS x SHIVER `N SHAKE
RACE 6
1 INK HEART - Seems to have had issues by the number of rests, well beaten on c debut. Although that was from a bad draw in much better class and he now tries blinkers and has a high draw she is hard to recommend coming off another rest with a big weight
2 FAVOURITE DAUGHTER - has a respectable record of 1-1-3 from 8 c/d runs but those top 3s all came in maidens. Drifted badly and was disappointing on her post maiden run on the sand but, given that she ran 2nd on the turf in her first race out of the maidens, it is perhaps best to ignore that latest run. Drawn low but if producing her best is not to be overlooked
3 PROLAN - Slammed opposition by 9l when winning her maiden on c debut but was then off for 58 weeks and has not convinced in two c runs since. Not one I will have confidence in until there is a form return but worth noting Khumalo is aboard, drawn in 6
4 PLEASURE JET - Decent c debut when beaten 0.75l into 4th from a low draw of 4, which she has again here. No reason to think she won't repeat the run and if so doing must have a chance
5 SEATTLE FAIRY - Won maiden on debut but three poor runs since, two of them here. Fradd is up, blinkers on and a decent draw in 8 but another who needs a form return before being a betting proposition for me
6 BEAUTIFUL DAWN - overall c record of 1-4-0 in 20 runs and 1-0-0 in 5 over c/d. This is a big drop in distance from recent outings but she has run well over 1200 and has a good draw in 12. Would not be the biggest shock to see her win but might find this a little on the sharp side now
7 CAROUSEL - Magner. Shock 90/1 winner of her maiden last time out on her 2nd run at the c. Drawn low in 2 and though can't be discounted is unlikely to repeat for me
8 FIGURINE - 1-1-1 in 6 c/d runs and a fair 4th last time out when in front of 3 of these (4.5l ahead of FD and is now 1kg better off). that run was off a 17 week rest and assuming she has come on for that run she has e/w potential here. Drawn low-ish in 5.
9 PLANET QUEEN - Form somewhat difficult to read given the constant changes in d, decent last time against stronger over this c/d and was over 10l ahead of Boujis (see PJ) but is yet to finish in the top 3 in 7 c runs. If reproducing that run from a decent draw of 9 then she must have a big chance
10 UMCEBO - Sand debut. comes off a 13 week rest, done little on turf and not one where the breeding necessarily suggests she will take to the surface, highly unlikely
11 SAVANNAH MONTANA - 2 wins in 10 c visits with 1 win 3 over c/d. Interestingly PS retains the ride having not ridden her out in the heavy defeat over 200 further last time when drawn wide. Most recent runs have been disappointing though and she has not won since her second outing but was a decent runner-up over this d on the turf in her penultimate run. Not to be discounted from a good draw of 10 but hard to have confidence in
12 RAVING QUEEN - With the appie up she has a 4.5kg pull with Figurine for 3ls on her sand debut but likely to find this difficult from the 1 box
13 CRACKER DOBA - Pettigrew. 2 silvers in 7 c runs but recent runs appear uninspiring and though she has a light weight will need a big improvement to feature
PLANET QUEEN x FIGURINE x FAVOURITE DAUGHTER
RACE 7
1 ESCAPE CLAUSE - On 2nd run after a 27 week rest so should strip fitter, down in class and the appie takes weight off. Has a very respectable 1-2-1 record in 6 c/d runs and has won from the 9 draw so not impossible for him from the 10 box but still a tough ask
2 HANG FIRE - 4-1-4 from 15 c runs but only 0-0-2 in 4 at the c/d. Has 1.25l to find with EC on the run behind Yukon Gold with EC now 3.5kg better off due to the appie. Has PS up though and drawn well in 3 so not impossible that the form will be reversed
3 THE MUTINEER - Poor sand debut and drawn in 9. Appie takes some weight off but will have to show huge improvement to hit the line first
4 STAVINSKY - Not run on the sand for some time and is 0/3 for top 3 but would be fair to say turf form then was also uninspiring. The turf form has improved so possible sand efforts will also be better. Well drawn in 2 but will have to prove he can perform on the surface before I get involved
5 HALLOWED - Pettigrew/MVR. 3rd, 4th and 5th in 3 c/d runs. Has 3l to find with EC on the run behind Yukon Gold with EC now 3kg better off due to the appie. Jumped awkwardly that day but also seems held by HF on the run behind Dennis TM, has a chance but likely to find one or two better
6 WHERE`S MY CHOP - SJG/Chambers. Drops back in d and is 1-0-2 in 4 c/d runs. Stable returning to form and should come on for the last run which followed a 13 week rest. I am expecting him to be a big runner here
7 BAREBACK - Seems somewhat inconsistent but put in some decent efforts recently, has a 2-0-1 record in 13 c/d attempts and seems to go well under this appie. Has a chance but has been soundly beaten by both HF and WMC previously and not one that particularly appeals
8 KWAAIWATER - Low weight and blinkers on but d likely to be an issue, usually tires over 1000 and has only gone this d once in 30 runs.
9 DEFENDER OF PEACE - Spies. Two poor c runs and though he has the 1 draw he has lost ground at the start in both those runs. Chambers is not on board and though has often found market support it is difficult to see improving to win this
10 TUESDAYS CHILD - 3rd run after a rest but yet to finish in the top 3 from 4 c visits or in 4 turf efforts over the d. Appears to need to have a big improvement to feature
WHERE`S MY CHOP x ESCAPE CLAUSE x HANG FIRE
RACE 8
Just seen THH has posted so wish to finish up and compare (and hopefully get a confidence booster or two lol) so going to finish by simply saying that the last looks the most difficult of all on a competitive card. A few have won for me previously but on first look I'll stick with Mauri Blue to keep improving and Velddrifter and Mexican Glory for places. But there are plenty in with chances and I will probably have a closer look tomorrow.
Be(s)t of luck to all (tu)

Having looked at R8 a little closer, I am now in the Velddrifter camp, just can't ignore the time of his last run. Will side bet on Mauri Blue though, can't mention him and then completely ignore!
TT, you ain't no leech in my book. Lurcher... hmmm, I have no clue and leave that to your own conscience!
I am getting a bit "worried" with some comments regarding this leech business and that it is possibly being misinterpreted by some. A leech is a non-contributor who either only ever views and uses or simply asks for info etc without ever giving anything in return. And don't say you know nothing or you are learning, plenty of us in that boat!!! and I for one still make an effort, but then I'm just great hahaha
