Too true.....and although I don't know Mentor I think that he and Paul were fairly compatable.....Charles on the other hand is a totally different cup of tea.....only very good trainers can get that little bit extra out of medocre horses.....but the very good trainers don't keep buggering about with these mediocre types either.....as for Love Struck and the so called up and coming Admirals Eye they will win races but Charles cannot make them superstars they are what they are .....they will remain competitive at the levels that they have already reached.....:

There is a bit of history about the purchase of Love Struck by the owner, another episode of controversy doesn't surprise.

Love Struck..SA Classic..his last 100 runners have produced 11 winners as well as 32 place cheques ie 43% runners to stakes earned, hardly a bad return for his owners (tu)

It does happen, some improve for a change of environment and more commonly for a change of routine.
Regarding training ability. It counts for a fraction of success( my opinion).if you know how to get a horse fit and run it at the correct distance
you can train. The biggest obstacle to success is having inferior horses.
One of my pals has trained group winners, winners at Ascot, winners in America.I went to see him recently,he is having the worse run of form
since he took out a licence. He is not doing anything different to he's previous success, but the string he has are not good enough..
Another pal has relinquished he's licence,he won one of the biggest sprint handicaps not long ago and was prior to that one of Godolphins
senior work riders. He now chauffeurs SDS around..Reason,when the stars of the yard were injured or retired the replacements were not good enough.
It's the horses ability that is paramount, every owner and trainer dreams of finding a nugget instead of fools gold.

owner has choice as to who trains his horses because he pays the bills.everyone has an opinion on trainers and imo c laird is not a top trainer if he is judged by his track record over the years.he trained very expensive imported horses for m jooste with a marcus as the pilot in the past and he had many top horses who won 3 or 4 in a row ,but never trained on.i dont know if that was the trainers fault or if the horses were just expensive flops, but since m jooste gave other trainers like ramsden,j soma horses he seems to be winning more gr1 races even quality gr1s like cape guineas and queens plate which c laird couldnt do for m jooste even tho he had plenty ammo from the owner.this is just my opinion and i hope that this new owner has plenty success with his horses with his new trainer.just remember 29 of 31 gr1 races were won by cape bred horses (saw on tt at cape breeders awards)last season so if that trend continues then it doesnt matter who trains your horses, but rather wat horses you buy for your trainer.lol

Davetheflower, I hope you have more luck trying to explain that to some posters!
You are exactly right though. The horse's ability is paramount. Without that no one can do anything.
