"Trainers" treating racing like the lotto
11 years 4 months ago
These days it seems like trainers are treating races like the lotto with the feeling and thoughts that "if you don't have a ticket, you don't have a chance".
In my personal opinion it is embarrassing as a horse racing follower and should be even more embarrassing to some of those race horse trainers out there!
Trainers are running horses in races, closing their eyes and hoping for the best, where is the skill and/or professionalism??
I see more and more feature races with horses in their just to make up a field and this is 100% fault to the trainers. I would rather see a G1 field consisting of 8 quality runners than a field filled with soup meat to make it look better!
By trainers entering these well below average horses it will have absolutely not positive outcome for them and can only cause complications for those horses that actually deserve to be in the race.
Complications tend to end up having these decent horses drawn in the bush, interference by horses who cant even keep up with the pace, or the complete opposite of having a false run pace by a 100/1 shot trying to skip on its far superior contenders!
As I said in the beginning I blame this 100% on the trainers and lack or professionalism to just throw horses into a race a cross thumbs. Every single owner might as well get their own trainers license and start nominating!
One ridiculous excuse that some trainers would tend to use is..."the owner wanted the horse to run in the race". if you are a "professional" trainer but cannot tell your owner where YOU are placing the horses that he pays you to train, rather tell him to take out the license.
If I pay for a ticket to go and watch the springboks play at Ellis park, I am not going to tell Heyneke Meyer who to put on his starting line up!
I read a post today with regards to Louis the king winning the derby. If he can get the distance and be the only horse since Horse Chestnut to win the triple crown would you want to see a full field of 20 runners and have him drawn 19 out of 20 because soup meat took up the rest of the draws so that the trainer could have a horse to run last??!
Or in more recent fields and another very big up and comer named Atomic Rush getting a draw of 15 out of 16 and have a horse with a merit rating of 50 be a reserve and potentially have a better draw??
The goal is not to just entertain the public with 8 horse fields, but to hopefully have the sport of kings led by a group of Professional Trainers.

I think we should just shoot horses that are not good enough!!!
sorry for the tongue n cheek response above but come on,would you rather have graded races with 5 runners like we have in the uk? the public would soon lose interest,or even more interest

I think I would prefer a smaller field than have half of them at a price of 100/1. I believe the publics interest wouldn't be determined on the size of the field, but rather the quality. When Frankel was running his biggest field he ever ran in consisted of 11 runners and yet he had viewers from across the world.
I am not saying small fields are ideal, and I guess I am just looking at it from my own eyes if I were a trainer, that I would be embarrassed to run a horse that does not have the class and go unsaddle him when he runs last.

cracing... I appreciate your love of the sport and I accept it may be a great spectacle for you to watch as you clearly have a much greater appreciation of a class horse than I but, as someone who loves gambling, for me personally, it is often finding the one that you no doubt refer to as soup meat to win at big odds that makes horse racing appealing to me. Take that opportunity from me and you take racing from me.
And there is one huge difference regarding the owners saying they want their horse to run etc, you don't own the Springboks.

cracing you are 100 percent correct but its a game that has massive egos in it and they want to be seen in the parade ring on big days even if they have a horse with zero chance...unfortunately the new brand of owner today has a lot less understanding of the industry compared to years gone by where the owners would let the trainers get on with it...like iv said before ego ego ego

I can totally agree and understand the view coming from a gambler and landing those big odds every now and again.
With regards to the owners, I just believe that if they pay a professional to condition, prepare and ultimately race their horse they should have total control over it. Owner pays= watch= enjoy the game. Rugby supporter= watch= enjoy the game. Slight stretch
