Wow so claims are lower now than 20 years ago. So in PE you can't get R1000 wins on an 8/1 shot. :

Bookmakers don't want to do business (as shrek says, relate the new claims to the value of the Rand, over time) and yet they behave like dogs in the manger to prevent betting exchanges (or a fixed odds tote)..............and us punters let it happen!!!!

£200 UK @ 4/1 is over a full claim, talk about being able to manipulate a market for a bag of midget gems

Betexchange has a market "Not to Win" in South African races. Closes you can come to laying a horse if you don't fancy it.

That's me............need to open an account.I doubt it will last though as they stand the loss ............not just facilitating the bet>
I suggested this to few bookies a while back who either said they did not want to do it....... or didn't think they could set up a programme!

"You" can get any amount your bookmaker will lay you, but the bookmaker can't get more that R7500 back from the claims at the speaker price.
It's a double edge sword which isn't all bad for punters because if the trigger that shortens prices is too light it means that everything else will be drifting too quickly in response. It may mean you have to time your bets to maximize the value you get. It doesn't make that much sense to have a system that shortens horses too easily because then it becomes too unreal. What could happen is the adjustments in response to a claim become smaller.

I agree with you. The market is small relative to the sheer amount of racing on offer. It's hard enough taking 20 or 30 bets a day, without having to place bets on tomorrow and the day after, so there is obviously no "market" and the betting percentages are cautious till a "market" can establish. Given that the claims must be adjusting to some reality. Antepost is of little interest to most punters (and therefore most bookmakers) and you can anticipate that betting may come out closer and closer to when markets are real.

Jack ,maybe it`s the time to go down the UK route,no early betting until the day of the race, unless it`s a feature race or decent handicap?
let the punters make a book on the day
let the punters make a book on the day

Me personally i have never understood the rational behid the claims. I have spoken to my bookie on numerous occasions but i still dont think he makes sense , by telling me " i claim horses to shorten it" yet he has no say in what the new price is going to be. I agree with Hibs the percentages are too high in this country and yeah i know we get a stretch , but that means nothing to me. I rather take a bigger price with no stretch than getting a way lower price plus stretch.
The mere fact that any amount of money can shorten a horse proves that some serious attention needs to be paid to the percentage we (punter) bet too as i belive that this ''claims'' can open the door to maipulation of the betting!

The amount of horses that are claimed just before they are scratched, increasing the reduction factor, has to be manipulation. Happens too often to be coincidence!
