At the Vaal today,

Half of last years attendance , yet press releases are saying "record crowd"

“As Racing. It’s A
Rush we are pleased with the success and growth of the Emerald Cup. Today’s
crowd and proceedings echoed our message wonderfully, racing isn’t just
about gaming; a day at the races is part of a tangible lifestyle.”

Who too believe ?

Did look a bit sparse! The year Neil Andrews horse won seemed a bigger crowd!

Racing needs forward thinking people and they absent from the pool

I did not see one new punter at the rooms where I punt. On July day and Summer Cup day there are plenty new fish adding to the pools. Lets call a spade a spade, Vaal Sand racing does not capture the imagination of seasoned punters so what chance do we have getting occasional punters interested?

Bob, with respect to you, I cannot believe that ANY press releases could be talking about a "record" crowd yesterday.
I would say we had about half of last year, we could walk freely all over the course etc. My guess is 4 or 5 thousand people max.
Somebody is selling you down the river.....

The "its a rush" mob measure the success by how many kids were on the jumping castles..................lol.

We were told that the initiative would be drip fed...................which drip is supposed to be doing the feeding?

VAAL RACECOURSE

27 SEPTEMBER 2014

EMERALD CUP 2014 SIZZLES!

A record crowd descended on the Vaal Racecourse for the running of the 10th
Emerald Cup, a fine day out celebrating the beauty of thoroughbred horse
racing and spectacular performances from top South African artists.

Triumph for the much anticipated Grade 2 race, run over a distance of 1450m
on the Vaal sand track went to Tommy Gun who outperformed a strong field by
making most of the running from the word go. The Corne Spies trained
gelding was gallant all the way to the winning post denying Uncle Tommy the
title.

The course was a flurry of action as patrons eagerly cheered on their
favourite horses whilst the Emerald stage kept racing fans entertained with
performances from Lonehill Estate, Daniel Baron, Mathew Mole and Lloyd Cele
who put on their best performances and kept the crowds entertained well
into the evening. Another highlight of the day was the annual grooms
sprint which saw a field of 40 participants take to the race track
competing for the R15 000 stake.

Phumelela’s Marketing Manager Michael Varney commented “As Racing. It’s A
Rush we are pleased with the success and growth of the Emerald Cup. Today’s
crowd and proceedings echoed our message wonderfully, racing isn’t just
about gaming; a day at the races is part of a tangible lifestyle.”

Tell you what I backed Tommy Gun because Elvis tipped it strong on the ABC site as well as Across the Ice he dreamed I put places and LG's champ Trip Tease because Louis always has a winner on the big day there and posts here so crowd or no Im happy PS the only nice place to be on Emerald Day anyway is in LG's Picnic Site!

Frodo & I were on an outside balcony set up for Kelvin's clientele on the 3rd level. Although this place was packed it was not uncomfortable ( like sardines at the Durban july ) and I never waited long to place a bet. Walking round to the sound stage and outside braai area's was not overly packed.

Remember VAAL is about an hours drive from Joburg, so it is quite a schlep to get out there, and only committed racegoers go out there.

By the by, I NEVER TREK OUT TO THE VAAL UNLESS I HAVE A RUNNER ON THE DAY.

Oscar I kid u not, I got R6.60 / 1 place on ACROSS THE ICE, 4 places on Hollywood ( when he drifted out to 55 / 1 ) - Frodo can bear this out. Why oh why did I not play the quartet ? I had double floaters -paid R 68 G.

still I'm not complaining.
