IN this photo taken a stride after the winning post in Saturday’s Gr2 Joburg Spring Fillies & Mares Challenge at Turffontein, the grey Majmu (fourth past the post) appears to be intrigued by activities on the grandstand to her left. All ears, for sure, and perhaps not focused on running, on her first visit to the racetrack in five-and-a-half months.

Majmu had actually broken into full stride just a second before JC Photos snapped this pic – literally 50 m from the line when the race was as good as over!
Majmu was responsible for the exit of the majority of horseplayers from all-to-come bets and various exotic permutations. However, considering the difficulties she suffered during the running of the race, it is fair to say that Majmu’s followers, racing fans in general and the serious betting population’s admiration for Mike de Kock’s star filly would not have changed one iota after this contest. Their regard may even be a notch higher, despite her failing to find the first three!
Was Majmu’s mind elsewhere on the day, or did she suffer an unexpected poor ride from Champion Jockey S’manga Khumalo?
We spoke to Mike after the race and his comments will be included in our full review of a Spring Challenge we’d like to forget, Sunday am.

Best horse I have seen in some time...even with a very poor ride and, as intimated on article, horse was distracted...but that was long after race was lost by going up inside with no space...
Khumalo was / is champion jockey only because of number of mounts...200 mounts more than second most mounts by Yeni...and third lowest win % (after Cheyne and Yeni)...
The hardest working...most certainly...

Nobody who watches this horses progress from 400m+ to 100 can fail to realise how much better she is than this field. She was travelling 3 to their 1 until she was stopped dead in her tracks............she would still be unbeaten if Delpech had been aboard, of that I have no doubt!

With all due respect he is champion jockey but his lack of experience told badly imo and has a long way to go to be in the class of Delpech and Marcus etc. Riding the most winners doesn't mean neccesserily that you are a better jockey and I have no doubt that Delpech would not have made such a dof move - even my gran knew off a slow pace there may not be a run there. Very disappointing and imo very much overrated as a jock.
