Frodo wrote: Question to PeterD - how do you see the pace in the Paddock Stakes (will your filly be sitting handy) and the QP - because imo pace and position are going to decide those races ..... also regarding your filly, you would know more of course, but imo there must be some doubt about the 1800 - especially if she is going to follow her usual racing style of sitting handy?

Pace: Paddock Stakes
There is always the danger of a false pace in CT, especially with a headwind. However, there are a few that like to go handy like Tahini,Icy Fire, Star Express, Goodtime Gal. Safe Harbour and Star Express have draw 2 and 1, and are likely to go a sensible pace to keep their positions. Goodtime Gal and Sail jockeys will have to decide whether to go or slot in, and if there isn't a decent early pace, they should go around. The problem is often that there is a good pace early and then the leaders slow it up on the turn and cause bunching.
Final Judgement has a tricky draw of 7, and if you have a top jockey like Richard Fourie it is stupid to try to tell him what to do- he has to make the right decisions as the race unfolds. In a race of this calibre, it is preferable to settle and have the energy to run on, but if the pace is not on you are dead if you are not up with the bunch. Ideally you want a solid pace and to sit a few lengths off the leader.
I have no doubt that F J will get the trip- in fact I think she will get 2000m. Her run in the Thekweni can be ignored- the ground was shocking, and she did not enjoy the wet conditions exacerbated by the wide draw.

Queens Plate
I think that the Crawford runners will be up with the pace and Marcus will sit just behind the leaders if he is happy with the pace, otherwise he will dictate. Marinaresco will sit a few lengths off them and the faster the pace the better for him. The Conglomerate is another that could try to speed it up as this is short for him.

I will be with my own horse Star Express with Pierre up.

We have a good draw , Star Express ran 6th 4.35 lengths of in last years Race behind Smart Call as a 3 year old with Bela Bela a length in front of us in 3rd.

Her last run was after a set back during work with Bela Bela at Greyville that put us out for almost a year .

Yes over the 1400 last time Bela Bela went past us fairly comfortably , however Star Express was not fully tuned for that race and got beaten a half length.

Bella Bella may once again have our measure but 16/10 I think I saw Star Express a place . A good bet to add in your doubles and Trebles.

Go Star Express .

Typical work riders - the winner was draws down the inside and rightly came right to the outside - the second horse was drawn 1 and made the same move..... yet the rider of Desert Lark moved from an outside position down the inside .....

Like yesterday, this first race were fought out by runners drawn on the inside, yet the better going in those crucial last 200 m seem to be on the outside - please let them not bunch up on that outside rail again when coming into the straight around the turn :(
