Close Call
8 years 4 months ago
Having seen a few Ringers in my life , especially in the 90's , I must just say that this could have gone very pear shaped .
Wow talk about a close call 45 Minutes before a race. Feel sorry for whoever was responsible for loading the horses on the float.
The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an Inquiry held in Durban on 7 February 2017, Trainer Gavin van Zyl was charged with a contravention of Rule 72.1.45.
This arose in that he presented the incorrect horse BRIGHT BLESSED DAY to race in Race 1 at Scottsville Racecourse on 15 January 2017, instead of THE BYZANTINE, which was the correct horse carded for the Race in question.
Trainer van Zyl pleaded guilty to and was found guilty of the charge.
The Board considered all the evidence and the mitigating factors, which included that Mr van Zyl had brought this matter to the Stipendiary Board’s attention some forty five minutes prior to the start of the Race, upon him realising the error when inspecting his runners in the holding area.
The penalty imposed was a fine of five thousand rand (R5000) of which two thousand, five hundred (R2500) is suspended for a period of 18 months on the condition that he is not found guilty of a contravention of Rule 72.1.45 during that period.
Trainer van Zyl has the right of appeal against the penalty imposed.

In a case like that, if this horse ran and won, what actions or steps would have been taken if they had found out after the race??

Well it did happen. Think back to Magic Feet of Hodgson stable who in fact was Ignition Lady who got up to beat the favorite at long odds. The identifier never scan the horse before the race.

That is correct That was a Human error and the woman got reprimanded for not picking it up.
You cant get away with it all horses have their chips and passports checked.
Just very glad Gavin recognized that the wrong horse was there , shows he is a good trainer , most trainers leave it to the head boy to check what comes off the float .

If he hadn't noticed, I can imagine the drama . He would have been absolutely roasted and certainly would have had no mercy on this site, or any other, if discovered afterwards despite his innocence.
Definitely a big Phew! moment that it never got to that stage.

he breached the rules... an honest mistake but still a breach... much like if confess to a "crime" before the authorities are aware of it.. you are still guilty of that crime but the sentence might be more lenient because of your honesty
