I think Prizemoney in the UK for run of the mill races are about the same as SA

Australia about 75% better... Run of the mill handicaps 15-20 aus $

SA from about R260 per day, basic, full Training. Farrier, vets, noms are extras. Key in SA is to avoid vets where ever possible.
Some, though, are lower. Not sure how they come out on that...

It would be good to compare apples with apples.

Melbourne Cup (Hcp) Flemington 3200m $7,300,000 = R 75 117 000 ( 10.29 TO 1 )

16:20 RACE 7 THE VODACOM DURBAN JULY (Grade 1) - 2200m – R4 250 000

I can only look at Redcar and Chelmsford today as Saturday Prizemoney is inflated at the bigger tracks

The last race at Redcar the winner takes home R62000
The last race at Chelmsford the winner takes home R65 000

Australia as I posted yesterday a run of the mill handicaps are about $20k so pro rata you can work it out (about double our prize money for a handicap)

I think a fair barometer in this case would be to take a maiden plate in SA , UK , AUS and States or any other racing nation and establish how many months training will that last you?

I remember in the good old days SA was very competitive and well in front of UK and if not mistaken at the time SA was around 8 months and UK only 2

Yes trainers that use vets for any small injury can cause bills as high as the training costs.

Beware as they are totally hidden when putting a syndicate together

Doesn't make economic sense to raise the fees. A perusal of owners numbers over the last 20 years makes for some very sobering viewing.

Imo difficult to gauge what the 'right' fee should be; ideally it firstly should be enough to be able to care for and feed the horses properly (employing 'enough' and capable grooms paid a 'fair' wage) and secondly to provide the trainer with 'fair' compensation; on the other hand that 'right' fee will probably be too much for many 'small' owners to afford .... a rich man's game after all
