18 runners took their place on the day.

6 have not run again.?? 5 were rock stars before the July or due to be retired.
one of these have been sold to Mauritius.
one has gone to Dubai.

of the remaining 12

Winner top draw.
2nd place running to about a 95 level since july
3rd not running unplaced runner in PE. nothing since July
4th and 5th not run since
6th place may still be top draw.
7th place. nothing since july to talk about. shoud be rates 102 after majorca
8th place won a weak Summer cup
9th place top horse
10th place poor mr 95
11th place average
12th place consistent
13th poor
14th 15th 16th not run since
17th poor

I would agree not the strongest of July fields, but need to bear in mind that :
3rd Elusive Silva was returning from a career threatening injury and never regained his 3yo form
4th Majestic Mambo exported to Dubai
5th African Night Sky was injured in running and later did a tendon
6th Rocket Countdown retired due to injury
8th Tilbury Fort - good handicapper
13th Secret Potion Good staying filly but few races over her proper trip of 2400m
17th Gold Standard top class retired to stud

So maybe a very unlucky bunch wrt injuries. Not any weaker than most years.
The fact is that the July and the Summer Cup are handicaps, and should not be Gr1 races, despite the prestige and prize money. Big fields, but mostly consisting of ordinary handicappers, with just a few top class runners each year.
