In something of a bizarre twist following the announcement on Thursday of the closure of Kimberley, the Gauteng Gambling Board has called for expressions of interest to develop, own and operate a racemeeting licence in Gauteng.

The undated notice in the possession of the Sporting Post states that there is currently only one licence in Gauteng and as the statement confirms, that was issued at the dawn of the democratic dispensation in SA.

Read the gazette here

In the interests of fostering competition in the horseracing betting industry, the board wishes to establish whether there is an appetite and need for additional racemeeting licences.

The closing date for submissions of interest is 30 September 2019.

I read this on Sporting Post and agree with some comments - this would be the perfect time for bookmakers, or even better, Betfair to enter the market.

I was told a story by an individual who represented Betfair in this country that a meeting was arranged many years ago to address the feasibility of Betfair formally entering the SA market. A Betfair executive flew over to engage with the powers that be. The man got stood up and the meeting was cancelled while the man was waiting to present his pitch.

I actually met with Elliott on numerous occasions to try and help introduce Betfair into SA.
I arranged a meeting with Interbet (Johnnie Stark and Gary Phia) and Betfair (Elliott Kernohan) at Emperors.
The concept of an exchange hit many brick walls and the biggest one remains that the law states punter to punter is outlawed and you need to obtain a bookmakers licence to hold a bet.
If not mistaken the Interbet lads had the concept of an exchange even before Betfair?
In its simplicity i still think it is one of the most innovate means to get people interested in gambling and would certainly introduced a new market of whiz kids into the game.
I gave away many copies of Betfair for dummies in these days.
Also had the privilege to attend Cheltenham and Kempton park with the Betfair team.

Just as a matter of interest

The first race from Turffontien was a fairly non/open event

I thought I would check if there was any interest on the Betfair market, I have no idea if it was shown on UK tv or in the bookies and considering it is banned in SA

Matched in race one Betfair was 14015 GBP at 18/1 exchange rate was R252,270 win market

Watching the Tellytrack screen the last figure I could view at the off was R179,580 on the win market

Food for thought?

Not sure what good Betfair would do now? They have changed their business model so much over the years and their sports book is shocking and they restrict punters more than any other these days

The best option would be to invite the bookmakers into a tote partnership

Its true Bob but just to highlight how much money is being punted into SA racing markets without benefit to SA racing .
Is it not surprising that more money can be attracted for a SA event than shown in local market interest.

Where do you make your shit up - seriously ?

The Betfair issue went all the way to Public Hearings in front of a Gaming Commission.
