Total Stakes in SAF over 5 seasons - R129,040 Runs: 38 Wins: 16 Placed: 15

Phantom Earl was a sire also.

Backed Colne Valley by Phantom Earl, who won the Grade 1 Allan Robertson at any price.

Never knew that Phantom Earl actually beat Wolf Power over 1400mts in the Holiday Inns Trial at Turffontein giving him as much as 3kgs.
Phantom Earl had a full brother Extra Cover who was also a top sprinter and eventually a sire.

Great family as the best of the lot was Scarlet Lady. She was by Lords/ Scarteen who was a full sister to Masked wonder if I remember correctly. She was better than Extra Cover and I believe the best sprinter I have seen in SA and the best I have worked with including UK. Of those 4 top sprint races at Scottsville that are now on the same day, ( Alan Robertson, SA Fillies sprint, Gilbeys etc)she won 3 and ran a head 2nd in the other one. Should have won but anyway. Absolutely brilliant.

When that Holiday Inns Trial was carded I remember Francois Wolfaardt, racing journalist and commentator, publishing that hors d’oeuvre were always better than the main course (referring to the Holiday Inns race itself). I thought it was quite clever in light of the fact that he wrote a weekly newspaper article named “horse d’oeuvres” :-).
By the way, yours truly was at the course that day to see the Phantom v the Wolf.

The battle of the greys or was it roans?
Extra Cover was also a grey. Trained by Alistair Gordon and Craig Eudey I think.
Scarlet Lady also came from their yard but was not a grey.

Yes Extra cover was a big strong grey and Scarlet Lady was a very strong, almost black filly.
