L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate - Behind closed doors

While we wish to be welcoming all our guests back to the beautiful Kenilworth Racecourse over Friday 8th and Saturday 9th of January 2021 for the 5th official L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Racing Festival, for the first time in sixteen years of sponsorship our upcoming event will not be a public event to ensure the safety of all our attendees in line with current pandemic protocols. The 160th running of the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate, and all other sponsored races over the upcoming #LQPRacingFestival2021, can still be enjoyed by all from the comfort of your home.

#LQP will be announcing some exciting partnerships with event sponsors, to make sure the races still come to you!

Keep your eyes on us for announcements over the coming few weeks to see how you can still dress up, show up, join in and win from the comfort of your home.

Unreal as we have just gone into november and they already announce a closed door event. No need for any coverage this year.

A very sensible decision. The costs of setting up for a major event are huge, and there is little prospect that big parties and functions will be allowed/ be prudent anytime in the next few months.
Far better to keep the brand active by putting effort into a virtual event this year, and be back with a bang next year.

And brands can’t be held responsible for sharing viruses!

I’m sure the MET still needs a sponsor as well?

I think the Met will get a very small sponsor as it will just be a race without a event.

The chances of COVID being an issue in January is rather miniscule in my opinion. Hot, dry summer weather with blustering South Easters should ensure minimum infections.... especially outdoors.

Are you forgetting this is South Africa you're talking about?

This year's July was probably one of the most boring and uninspiring in a long time, both as an event as well as the quality of horse. Don't know that the event can handle being behind closed doors, needs the drunken crowd noise to make up for the mediocre field. It is a handicap after all, as Belgarion duly proved.
