HANDICAPPING RATINGS UPDATE

• Daily News 2000 (Grade 1)
LINEBACKER remains unchanged on a rating of 124 following his success in the Grade 1 Daily News 2000 for three-year-olds over 2000m on the Greyville turf course on Saturday 29 May. It was LINEBACKER himself who was considered to make for the most suitable line horse when assessing this event, hence his unaltered rating.
2nd placed RASCALLION goes up from 111 to 123, 3rd finisher KOMMETDIEDING was raised from 120 to 122, and 4th placed SHAH AKBAR goes up from 108 to 119. The only other increase was for 7th placed FLYING CARPET, who goes up from 108 to 110 and so making him rated equal to 9th finisher THE GATEKEEPER, who remains unchanged on 110.
No horses were given a rating’s drop as a consequence of this race.

• Woolavington 2000 (Grade 1)
WAR OF ATHENA remains unchanged on a mark of 122 after her success in the Grade 1 Woolavington 2000 for three-year-old fillies over 2000m at Greyille on Saturday. The Handicappers were of the view that 4th placed CHAT CHING made for the best line horse, which leaves her unchanged on a rating of 114. In assessing the race this way, WAR OF ATHENA and 2nd placed PRINCESS CALLA both run two pounds below their ratings, which means that PRINCESS CALLA also remains unaltered on a mark of 118.
3rd placed SCENTED MISTRESS goes up from 91 to 116, she finished a mere short head behind the 118-rated PRINCESS CALLA at level weights in this Grade 1 event and would be 1kg better off at the weights should they meet in a handicap.
There were no other increases aside from Scented Mistress, and no horse was given a ratings drop.

• Lonsdale Stirrup Cup (Handicap (Grade 3)
BLACK KNAP has had his rating raised from 98 to 100 following his narrow win in the Grade 3 Lonsdale Stirrup Cup (handicap) over 2400m at Greyville on Saturday. It was 3rd placed FAVOUR who was used as the line horse, but his rating nevertheless goes up from 96 to 97 as he carried one pound or half-a-kilo overweight.
2nd placed MATTERHORN was raised from 100 to 101 while the only other increase was for HOLY WARRIOR. This gelding was 3.5 kgs or seven pounds under sufferance at the weights and was raised from 87 to 90 to make him higher than WEALTHY, who finished 0.80 lengths behind him at level weights and who was dropped from 90 to 89.
Aside from WEALTHY, there were drops for a number of other horses, MARCHINGONTOGETHER is down from 104 to 102, BLACKBALL drops from 110 to 108, CATCHAFALLINGSTAR was cut from 97 to 92, MERLIN FROM BERLIN goes from 91 to 90, PAYBACKTHEMONEY was dropped from 99 to 97, and lastly PATHS OF VICTORY was dropped from 104 to 103.

• Milkwood Stakes (Handicap)(Listed)
IRIS has had her rating raised from 90 to 95 after she comfortably won the Listed Milkwood Stakes (handicap) for fillies and mares over 1000m on the grass track at Fairview on Friday 28 May. The Handicappers felt that 4th placed JOYFUL NOISE made for the best line horse, 2nd placed TRUE CHARM and 3rd finisher SPRING BREAK both go up from 90 to 91. JOYFUL NOISE as the line horse remains unchanged on 106.
There were no other increases, but five horse received a rating’s drop. RACINE is down from 98 to 96, MENDOCINO was trimmed from 88 to 87, BOOMPS A DAISY drops from 94 to 93, GIN FIZZ is down to 102 from 103, and lastly VODKA LIME was dropped from 86 to 83.

Just a few comments; re the DN, why is it more logical to assume that Shah Akbar and Rascallion suddenly improved 11 points and 12 points respectively - rather than Linebacker and Kommetdieding running 10 points lower - bringing Russian Rock and Flying Carpet 'into line' ?

Re the Lonsdale, wasn't there a whole discussion about how the ratings for the Greyville 1900 was capped resulting in She's a Keeper only being rated at 96 - well on my sums if one takes Matterhorn's run in the Lonsdale at face value (101) it would mean She's a Keeper only ran to 94 in the 1900 - still way below poor Atyaab's official rating of 114 (admittedly too high imo) - makes a mockery of the July log - of course the retort would be that 'they' reserve the right to invite who they want

Two of the biggest stumbling blocks(sure there are many others) to getting racing SA moving forward.

NHRA - should be reconstituted.

and this Merit rating committee and it current guidelines approach.
the three members should be rotated out every 6 months with three new people never the same three people.
penalising horses outside teh top 4 in teh current low stake enviroment is just wrong.
increasing horses by 12 -16 point for running a place in any race wrong in low stakes environment. SHAH AKHBAR owner might be happy gets them a run in the July but still wrong.
need a more conservative approach on the up side and a more aggressive approach on the down side.

My thought is they have a directive to keep MR' high in certain races so as to guarantee Grades status' for these races. also wrong if the case.
