S T R A N G E ! ! !

I'm experimenting with Backing and Laying horses.
Mostly Laying. All shortish priced with not much liability in case it wins.

Today, I Layed a favourite called POQUELIN. At Cheltenham 15:50.
It was at odds of 5/2.
I staked 8.5 at odds of 3.3, my liability being 19.55 pounds.
Halfway through the race, I noticed the odds shorteneng and got scared.
What did I do. I chickened out and put a 5 pound Back bet on Poquelin, at 5, to try to soften my expected loss.
My bet was eventually matched.
2 pounds at 95 ? ? ?
3 pounds at 110 ? ? ?
Net Back bet of 5 pounds at 104 with profit being 515 pounds. Very Strange.

Well, Poquelin won.
I lost my lay bet of 19.55 and won the Back bet of 515 pounds
Checking on a results website, it says the horse nearly fell at the 6th fence (water jump).
So maybe a lot of punters were desperately trying to offload their bets, hence the high prices.
This will probably never happen again but if it does I'll be able to put more DRINKS on the table.

Enjoy. I am drinking to your GOOD HEALTH.

Thanks Scotia.

I was gobsmacked.
I'm playing with a small bank of 200, which is now nearly 800.
Couldn't believe it.
Very nice with the new increased rate of exchange.
Will still tread warily.

If CC runs a good race then I will be there for the next run.
Keep some JWB for me.

worked in your favour this time, but you should always make sure you cancel unmatched bets, dont know if you seen this race but the winner made a bad mistake and was tailed of with one to jump and flew up the hill

glad to hear about the good win Wally, but in running is a tough cookie these days, with people 'in the loop' getting on track pictures a second or 2 before the bulk of punters and they're fleecing us all.

I used to make a few hundred pounds each weekend just on picking out runners that looked to be travelling well (not foolproof but did work out more than it didn't). But in the last 12-24 months it's been almost impossible - submit the bet expecting to get about 5/1 and the horse is odds-on? That's using terrestial tv which is supposed to be the quickest out there, but clearly it isn't anymore.

But anyway enjoy the spoils from today!!

Hello All,

I've made this comment before and I'll repeat it here for those who might have forgotten or not seen it:

All taxpayers in good standing with SARS ( hence the need to apply for a directive ) are permitted a once-off offshore allowance for investment of R2 million. A married couple would, therefore, effectively have access to a R4 million allowance

There is nothing to stop the taxpayer depositing this amount into, say, a UK bank and thereafter transferring a portion ( or all of it ) into a Betfair account.

An earlier writer has indicated that the authorities have more pressing issues to pursue than chasing after Betfair punters. He is probably correct although I am sure the local racing authorities ( particularly those with tote interests ) would love to shaft you with SARS/Exchange Control if they could! They are probably only circumspect about doing so because they would probably be attacking their own owner and punter base.

Many punters have already used their credit cards to make deposits into Betfair. Providing this is done with restraint you will probably get away with it although you ARE breaking the law. There are a number of urban legends circulating regarding action that has been taken against users of this method. What probably has not been spelled out is that the 'offenders' probably abused the system and shipped out too much money or ( this being the more likely scenario ) could not settle their credit cards - prompting action from the bank which eventually spilled over to foreign exchange.
