Dear Dave,
Just under a month ago, a time bomb started ticking for South Africa's horseracing industry when one of its leading trainers, Anthony Peter, had his remaining runners scratched during Turffontein's biggest race day of the year. Peter, who saddled the first race winner, is proclaiming his outrage in a very public manner by launching a R70m defamation action against the National Horseracing Authority which he claims defamed him. Complicating matters is the suspension of his runners was lifted the next day.
Racing was part of my life for decades. I spent a fortune on my passion - creating SA's first horseracing newspaper and feeding more bad horses than good- but I still ended up with more than 100 winners. You get the idea. I also fed mares, foals, and stallion owners for many of those years. I also unsuccessfully attempted to replicate Federico Tesio (google him) at a boutique breeding farm in the Midlands of KZN.
For a good part of it, I also invested a lot of time, pro bono, as a director of the Racing Association in Gauteng and JSE-listed Phumelela (then in rude health). Reason: racing is a sport of princes and knaves. Unless shenanigans of knaves are rigorously policed, exposed and punished, the entire edifice upon which the industry is built - the studbook and the formbook underpinning it - turns into fiction.
I am long gone from the industry and have never met the man, so I have no idea whether Anthony Peter is a prince or a knave. But what I do know is the action taken against him is unprecedented. Which, in horseracing, is saying something. So am fascinated to see how this defamation suit progresses. And progress it will, because the NHA is sure to defend with equal vigour, especially as rumours within the racing community are true - it has one Paul O'Sullivan in its corner.
SA's most famous forensic investigator responded to my email yesterday confirming it: "O’Sullivan Brosnan and Associates have been appointed by the NHA, who are responsible for maintaining the integrity of the sport of horseracing in Southern Africa. We have been appointed for the purpose of investigating certain alleged illicit activities and have already commenced investigations."
The man responsible for putting two SA Police Commissioners behind bars added: "Once criminals get a hold on any sport, the confidence is lost and with it the belief that the sport has integrity. This drives away those that want to play the game by the rules and makes a fertile ground for mafia like take-overs. It also destroys investor confidence, resulting in the ultimate collapse of the sport and all the paid employment that goes with it."We are not authorised to discuss the merits of our investigations or the outflows from our findings. However, we already have the ‘inside track,’ so to speak, and will give those involved in hanky-panky that is clearly intended to make illicit profits a good run for their money. More than 20 years ago, I was called in to sort out similar challenges facing what was then known as The Jockey Club of Southern Africa. We got it right then, and we’re confident we’ll get it right this time."

This is the clearest proof that the NHA do not have sufficient evidence against the Peter yard and are now clutching at straws.
Where is this video Hyde referred to when he scratched the Peter horses on Summer Cup day?
This guy should resign along with a few others, they have lost control.
As an aside - what is o' Sullivan referring to 20 years ago? Was it the Cape mafia guy who was threatening Branden Morgenrood?

....it would have to be a knave to try catch another knave.....this O'Sullivan character is not exactly squeaky clean either.....he was the oke responsible for burying the Randburg Waterfront as the security director and with his police reservist status in raiding the very popular establishments there looking for underage patrons.... the whole fiasco was broadcast on Carte Blanche and lthis T V debut then launched his presence putting him into the limelight which he seems to adore so very much....he often bragged back in the day that he was ex-SAS which was absoulute BS.... if I were Tony Peter I would not lose any sleep over it. The NHRA is now simply trying intimidation tactics by getting that crowd involved....a super sluth he is not....

this is becoming quite comical. NHRA claim that they have big evidence to stick Peter away....they then enlist a so called forensic specialist to try and find more evidence so that they can defend themselves.... someone please do not pull the plug on this .. as we want to see who has more cash to burn.

Something wrong with that claim about working with the then Jockey Club more than 20 years ago . as this character was still employed at Joburg Airport around that time. ...

With your brains you are at the right place..The Daily Maverick and Mail and Gaurdian have archive sections crammed with articles.. bit technically challenged ATM working off a phone to attached articles
....o Sullivan assisted lawyers with some of the dirt he had on Selebi from his airport stint....and then claimed that it was he that brought down Selebi... meantime those lawyers that actually did the work became the target of the network trying to protect Selebi...one very well known highly respected legal eagle was actually arrested by these bent cops in an attempt to stop him from probing Selebi... the lawyer that assisted with the wrongful arrest and got the trumped up charges dismissed .. later became became a target of o Sullivan in a different matter....I do not name drop here as it has no purpose as these professionals do not need to grandstand and write books about their role in actually putting Selebi behind bars....
but let's not sidetrack from the claim that has been made about assisting the Jockey Club more than 20 years ago.....impossible I say if not at ACSA or when he was too hellbent gathering dirt on Selebi and badgering the lawyers with his rather large dossier.....where did he find the time ... and besides those stiffs at the then Jockey Club could never have enlisted him as at that time he had no experience in super sluething until his role in bringing down Selebi only then got him in the limelight.....
