Great article on the Sporting Post

From 2006 to 2015 and again from 2018 to 2021, I served as an elected member on the Board of the NHA, writes Robin Bruss. Because of this 14 year experience, I feel qualified to make some comments and observations.

These are my own independent views as I’m no longer on the NHA board or any other board in horseracing, and all facts below are in the public domain from which I derive my views.I was an elected member of the Board, as distinct from an appointed member representing one of racing’s organisations, such as the TBA, the RA or the Operators. To be elected to serve on such a board is an honorary position in which one vows to uphold the Vision and Mission of the NHA, instil and enforce the Rules of Racing and protect the sport from malpractice.

Personally, I would not describe this article as “Great”.

The writer is confused in reminiscing of his “achievements” and blindsighted by his failings in discharging his fiduciary duties, irrespective of whether he was appointed or elected to hold office. To insinuate that being elected vs appointed means something special in the bigger scheme of thing is ridiculous to say the least.

That’s like someone who “was on mute” enjoying the fruits of apartheid pre 1990 and now claiming post 1994 that it was evil and immoral.

Just STFU or tell us what you did while holding office that is aligned with the messaging in your script.

I don’t disagree that change is overdue, but this BS, I can see through from 16 furlongs out.

He's an interesting man is Bruss. Over the years there's been a lot of grumbling about business deals that didn't work out as planned regarding payment. The one thing that will forever be etched into my memory was his hatchet job on the Concerned Owners when chairing the debate that was had on Tellytrack. He was very much partial, embarrassingly so, and was a clear and extremely biased  agent for the Jooste lot. History has shown how that ended. Perhaps Scotia can remind us as he was part of that shit show and can give greater insight as to what transpired.

There's an angle to all of this and its clear to me that Bruss is looking for employment of sorts. Give him his due, he writes well, but as the Saint alluded, the man had a lot of time to influence the direction that the NHA were taking when he was part of it, and did little.  His demise from the NHA is an interesting story in itself. Bloomberg backstabbing at it's best, but that's a story for another day.

To be fair to Bob
I sent the link to him as his copy paste skills are far better than mine.
It was me that suggested a great article and the replies on SP have also been excellent but the writers are way above my pay scale ⚖️.

As far as the reply on ABC from Saint T it looks at a different angle from the men in charge at the time and considering the top man of the Phumelela downfall has still never been brought to book, it's a sad story.

Let's consider a tote, its a wonderful concept, take money from an event, take a healthy percentage and then pay the pool divided by the winning tickets 🎟
No risk business.
What could possibly go wrong?
Only the overheads to run a tote exceed the healthy percentage.

Only an exchange eg Betfair was a better concept.

So what happened to the once mighty Tote?
We always had bookmakers .

The operators will blame the "open bet".
Phumelela should never have lost the case on intellectual property.

However what actually happened to allow Hollywood and WSB to become giants in the game was "customer care and treat the customer as 🤴.

The facilities and prices were better and that's why the massive migration from the traditional tote to upmarket bookmakers.

I look forward to the conclusion in the follow up post.

Good Punting 👍

I don't know about the Concerned Owners debacle, probably before my time. I definitely did not catch nor hear about the debate.

Are the matters from yesteryear relevant given that Owners are currently worse off today relative to Phum juggernaut
