Watching my best shot now Richard seems to ease him as he got to the line and I've obviously seen this before. Is this because handicappers take lengths won by and lengths beaten by when updating merit ratings?

I know nothing of ratings and handicapping (although it must influence them), but also no need to push a horse that was running away from them.
I'm also interested in the answer.
