Greg Bortz is on a mission to revive horseracing in South Africa. Boosting ownership is a partial solution, but what is being done to attract punters? The gambling rand is spent mainly on sports betting and online casinos. Horseracing has lost its appeal with all these other betting distractions. Horseracing will always be a lossmaker relying on the pockets of wealthy benefactors to sustain the industry. Expanding the Kenilworth racecourse to accommodate a casino, restaurants, shops, etc., may be the long-term solution for Cape Racing and something to be considered by the other racing centres.
