The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa (NHA) confirms that an interim suspension has been imposed on Trainer Lorenzo Karriem with immediate effect, pending the determination of an inquiry.
The background to this decision relates to concerns surrounding the care and the condition of horses that have been under his care.
NHA Officials have been monitoring the stable closely and in a late development on Monday, 31 March 2025, and after consultation with the owner of these horses, six of them were relocated to another trainer’s stable yard. The one remaining horse will be surrendered to the Coastal Horse Care Unit later today.
Mr Karriem has subsequently advised the NHA that he has relinquished his Trainer’s licence with immediate effect.
.......I feel for those horses but it seems like they were not the only ones that were used and then left to fend for themselves.....the human in this affair should have seen his fate and got out before hitting rock bottom and bringing this shame to the game....echoes of Leon Erasmus's son who also did similar.... ran out of support and could no longer afford to pay staff and feed horses.....shame
